remembering an uncommonly gifted friend...

Poem Artwork
Sometimes
I sift through
these memories,
where they eventually settled,
somewhere along a wooden
wall I once built
to defend
against
blustering forces,
and all those sudden storms
that rip roots, and scatter blossoms
along dirty un-swept curbs; a despairing
place where I’ve always dreamt of
finding SEEDS to replant you…

I’d like to believe-
considering how you’d
broadcast your words into
the grayest moments, and leave
behind only velvet-textured colors- that
there will always be some part of you
[in me] that satisfies this aching
to unwrap you, and to pour
your essence over me
like holy-water

Know that
I will forever hold
you above the others,
not in ritual,
or in blind adoration,
but in prevision of eternity,
remembering those days (before his
betrayal gutted you) when your soul sang:
‘My mountains carry you farther,
beyond all that you know,
beyond all that you are,
break for me my love,
become radiant
and pale,
beyond invisible beauty….. BE.’

So tell me…

Apart
from knowing
you are esteemed
and still held dear, what
is there lasting (in BEING) that
won’t blow away in the wind? And
what can I say that won’t get lost in a din?
And how should I feel, when most of
what I see seem the shadows of
a forever that never arrived…

I ENJOYED THIS KEEPER IMMENSELY RICHARD. IT REMINDS OF THAT OLD CLICHE' THAT, FOR ME, TOTALLY SUMS UP TENDER, HEARTBREAKING, YET...APPRECIATED AND NEVER FORGOTTEN...LOVE; 'BETTER TO HAVE LOVED AND LOST, THAN NEVER TO HAVE LOVED AT ALL'. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

You have captured the essence of loss. What can we do when something leaves our world? Maybe just hold on to the good and forget the bad, adding scar tissue to the broken places.

A resounding tribute and trust, bequeathed perhaps to an enigma, or per chance a reality that like your first stanza, become the growth of innocence stepping forth into the unknown, but knowing the pack on its back contained what counted. The unwrapping and pouring of its essence, contains the undeniable credence of its genesis, the hammer and nails that build the wooden fence, that ultimately joined the passing of time as a residual dust, a held-fast-part of love's beginning, the part that knows not a disappearance, but only a part of the "shadows of a forever that never arrived..." Indeed. For this reader, we should all be so fortunate as to have a reference point that knows no death, only aging, like a fine cognac. Splendid, my friend. Just splendid.
