And we all press on...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

Homelessness has quadrupled in San Diego the last several years. My wife’s drive to work each morning takes her through the most desperately overrun part of downtown. The image Michele captured here moved me emotionally and creatively. Ekphrastic poetry.

Poem Artwork
And we all press on…
.
Inside wedged memories,
When all that was envisioned
Careens soulless and pockmarked
.
When broken dreams and drops of
Rosewater – in self-righteous ceremonies –
Sublimate as vinegar upon the soul
.
When intellect and sacred verve
Trudge despondently along shelled paths
In search of stirring and life
.
And we all press on…
.
Through dark-minded struggles when
Heartlessness and eulogies are composed
In the woolgathering of less-spoilt days
.
When our judgment is seared with
The doctrines of devils, and our mask
Of mortality becomes a diaphanous cloak
.
When all we have yearned
For, and hoped for, and suffered
For, seems to leave us abandoned,
THEN,
.
And even then
.
When all malefic voices, and glowering
spirits, and things desolate and choking,
visit us in our dreams and twist us,
there is still hope, and we reach
up, and cry out, and press on
in faith towards a Kingdom
yet to come...
.
Let me rest inside your Truth Father…
To know you, to understand, to feel what you feel,
To transcend, for a moment, my own deplorable
Inadequacies and fly on the wings of YOU …

GOD NEVER PROMISED US A 'ROSE GARDEN', IN FACT, HE TOLD US IN HIS WORD THAT IN THIS WORLD WE WOULD HAVE TRIBULATIONS. HOWEVER, HE DID PROMISE TO GO WITH US THROUGH THE FLOOD...AND THE FIRE. THUS, THROUGH HIS AWESOME POWER, WE REACH...BY FAITH...FOR EACH NEW SUNRISE THAT HE GIVES AND...PRESS-ON! AMEN! A WONDERFUL PRAYER OF FAITH AND COMPLETE DEPENDENCE UPON OUR ALMIGHTY SUSTAINER AND REDEEMER...GOD, THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

An exquisite attempt to describe the mindset of those who by whatever means, end up on the street. While economics and joblessness certainly affects one's ability to pay for basics like rent and a vehicle, other factors like mental illness and drug and alcohol use result in the kinds of thinking you are describing in your poem.

Many of those on the street are offered shelter but don't want or take it.

Your wife has a sensitive eye and you a sensitive pen that explores the photo to great depths. Your last four lines are golden, they are a prayer in itself. Your poetry is always impeccably submitted and so much appreciated, have a blessed day, thank you for sharing this.

A fine write in defense of our supreme right to believe and have faith in light of the miseries and cruelties of the world and the inhumanity that is visited upon us.

Regardless of one's belief system in what makes for a successful person, or a person who finds success (his or her own definition) a rather evasive fact of life, there will always be the roll of the dice. For without a bit of the life-chance going in your favor, such situations, as in your poem, will continue to proliferate. Beautiful observations you've absorbed and shared in this poem. Kudos.
