Poem Artwork
.
He’d hear the
Naysayers saying
He was too broken to bloom,
That his struggles
Were too dire,
And that
Nothing could stop a
Young boy from disobeying…
.
He’d hear the
Hypocrites deigning
He was nothing like his Dad,
That the schism between them
Was too great,
And the
Needed discipline
Would cause permanent disdain…
.
But he brushed them off
And pressed
Into his visions,
Where, for decades,
He rode a breaking wave,
In a pocket of focused energy…
Ever wet with a decent happiness,
He bled intense fragility and accomplished
Things he’d never dreamed of…
.
BUT THE WARS CAME…
(Eventually) the bones of every
Unresolved circumstance pushed up
From their shallow graves to beset him…
.
Then life (for him)
Became like a small boat
Rising and falling with the tide;
Awakening, rising, eating, excreting,
Working, eating, sleeping, awakening, rising
In a kind of ritual monotony that often complicated
His energies in unforeseen ways… and
.
Like an Ishmael,
He pressed heaven to
Reveal why his creativity had
Become like soap-bubbles -
Floating ‘n popping -
And why the
Honest originality
He strove for was often
Lost in a haze of starts and stops
.
He recalls
(Now and again)
All the golden thoughts
He’d had that often felt exact,
Until he wrote them down
And read them,
And then he knew
How little he wanted credit for, and
How elusive the original things really were.

AMEN! THE BIBLE TELLS US THAT, '...'ALL' THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR OUR GOOD....'. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING CAN CHANGE OR PREVENT ONE FROM REACHING THE SHORES OF GOD'S ORCHESTRATED DESTINY FOR OUR LIVES. GOD USES 'EVERYTHING'(GOOD AND BAD) FOR HIS PURPOSE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING, RICHARD, DONE WELL AND ENJOYED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

There is a real struggle here going on between what is hoped for and reality. I certainly believe that statement by Horace. Routine life does not make for great thoughts.

As I've alluded to often, anonymity is the only precursor to notoriety that is worth paying any attention to. Only in this working state of satisfying oneself, sans creating for some preconceived reward from the outside, can a relative anonymous state of appreciation reward the artist's imagination and talent: expression which his inner-self asks of him. Some would say this is a belief that is housed in the world of true purpose. I would agree.

An intense, frank, and revealing poem about the struggles we go through, especially as poets. A fine write.

At times life does feel like riding a small boat in the rising tides. Up and down we go in the monotony of our despair.

"How elusive the original things really were" yes they were elusive, but we managed to slip knot them to our hearts, I pray you find more original things in your life each day, some elusive some not so elusive, just got back from MTL> spend my time in two nursing homes, I saw so much in four days. I'm mulching it cuz it's much. Take care, thanks for your brilliancy Richard.
