For a day together...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

In October of 2003 the ‘Cedar Fire’ burned over 270,686 acres in Southern California, including almost the entire Cuyamaca/Rancho State Park. It was California’s largest fire in recorded history. After the forest service reopened the park, the very first hike we embarked on became an experience that would always define a part of who we were together.

Poem Artwork
It was all too evident that
The paths here had changed,
Once a paradise,
Heightened by colorful
Posies of wildflowers and cactus;
A barren landscape now lay devastated…
.
Once a tapestry of life and color,
Now a sad abandoned playground, once
A verdant forest of green branches swaying,
Now the chalky remains of fires deadly frenzy,
Once a place satisfying the heart in joys lightness’s,
Now a ravaged topography begging for rebirth…
.
With heavy hearts we started up
Towards a scorched Cuyamaca Peak,
Over charred sands,
Along brush-fouled gullies,
Past blackened Pines and Manzanita,
Through the ashy dung of horses,
Where dust-devils swirled in
Quicksilver winds, and
Breath was drawn
Through handkerchief masks…
.
Often readjusting our
Backpacks, we tread-on slowly
Upwards through a wasteland of
Burnt vegetation, and a few lasting
Patches of wildflowers purple,
Calling out unabashed
For refreshing
Thoughts to rain down
Upon two discouraged hearts,
For keen ears to hear Wisdom’s voice,
For eyes to be opened
To the hidden
And the marvelous
In God’s majestic creation…
.
In that moment,
As a vision of roses thrown
Haphazardly upon charcoal,
I saw a woman’s form
As an effigy of Cytherea
Shadowed against remote ridges,
I watched as waves of midday heat
Shimmered over her features,
And soft dispersive breezes
Floated strands of
Silken hair…
She was there,
Beside me, as pure water
Flowing in far-reaching streams,
As a furtherance of deep-welling-visions
Imparted to the soul of one now fully amazed
.
For those moments my love
You became a bridge
Between my mind and actions,
Between my heart and my words,
You became the impulse
That gripped me in firm encirclement,
It was you Michele that I was
Shown as a loving vision,
It was you Michele
Who became
The wind in my hands,
It was you Michele
Imparting vitality
To insensate dailiness,
It was you Michele
Who I saw bathed in sunlight,
And for a day together
You took my hand
To take me soaring with the Eagles…

Ahhh . . . To have a Michele in our lives is a wonders thing for sure. To travel the scarred ground where flowers and grass used to go, backpacks getting heavier with each step, but plodding on is a picture of two people who had no other choice but to keep putting one foot in front of the other. I am happy you had Michele there, and the same goes to Michele having you. Sad, but beautifully rendered poetry.

An interesting turn of events in the middle of your poem where you turned from the melancholy of a fire damaged landscape to the admiration of your Michele. Nicely crafted.

I recall passing through a burned area that was rather small in the International Boundary Waters and arriving at Yellowstone about five years after the devastating fires there. Young trees were shooting up everywhere, and within 30 years or so, the forest would have returned completely.

I experienced much of the same feelings when a tornado wiped out the arboretum at the OARDC where we live. That first walk through there was like being on a barren world. It was heartbreaking to witness the destruction.

A magnificent rendition of your trek through the desolation of the national park. A fantastic read, vivid and compelling.

Sounds like your park was a beautiful place; those fires are so devastating that I actually feel sorry for you living so close to the park, if it is still able to be called a park...Lucky you are to have Michele to keep your vision remembering the nicer things in life...-e-

I agree with Odin, this was very special to read. I remember the great fire in California, that was quite a few years ago. Again you have made me feel, the true mark of a great writer. Thanks for sharing your gifted pen. I always look forward to seeing through the eyes of your mind. Be well,
