Hopeful Eyes

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

Portrayal 1. Not her gifts, successes, or her positive nature; it was the betrayals she’d gone through that were the most consuming influences in her life. As a result she took comfort in being withdrawn and introspective. A brief glimpse into long-suffering character. For ABB

Poem Artwork
She was the
Special WILdFLOWEr,
Grafted into shifting sands,
Ingenuous wide-eyes peeking
Out from the shadows,
Mindfully grasping at
Dragonflies and crayons;
A welling-up of pure intent,
Purposing to color in-between
All the lines of drab traditionalism …
.
Diligently she sought the
Beauty hidden in her sufferings,
Never wavering – never questioning –
Ingrained by almost everything but herself,
She became nothing to find something,
(As children, riant and dreaming,
Remained artless) so she
Sought humility’s
Cloak of collectedness
To influence the reverences she
Felt for what could never be understood …
.
But it
Was more
Than the grays
And shadows that
Clung to her each day,
It was the joyless tears of
Suffering coursing through
Her soul (as molten lava), and
All the appearances and effigies
Of possibilities that blossomed out from
The unknown regions of a malleable
Heart intent on pleasant melodies,
And the smile of ETERNITY...
.
But each day there
Remained (for her) the constant
Pains of loss, and making sense of
All betrayals that settled around her as
The dust of volcanoes… Still… nothing
Could dissuade her heart, and
.
She looked forward with hopeful eyes …

The ‘Portrayal’ series will be brief poetiprose insights about family and a few friends I grew up with. They will also portray some of the actors, artists, musicians, and writers that I worked with in college or professionally in my 20’s and 30’s. All of these individuals were instrumental in shaping the man I am today.     Poetry Life and Times

Nothing falls as hard as an optimist. Thankfully, she still has hope.

A wonderful work of art, Richard! I know "her" and empathize with "her" after reading your deeply-felt and well-articulated poem. You have the soul of a true poet.

This is brilliant work. I esp. like that last stanza. I don't know who "She" is but you have captured her truth in words, Richard.

Such pain, such torment mirrored in this poem Richard.
It really does not have to be this way for anyone.

If ever I knew someone by word of poetry deemed "noble," it would be you Richard. You have captured this diamond beautifully. Yesterday I wandered off to have a coffee by myself at the local shop. There was a mom and a young daughter. Her daughter was wheelchair bound and suffering from some nerve degenerative disease. I began to pray for her, and then I sat with them and enjoyed the company of two strangers who needed my positive talk and healing touch. I cannot begin to tell you how this experience touched me so profoundly. I left the shop and I heard a voice deep inside of me, this special phrase that I know came from albeit out there, 'HER SMILE WAS SO BRIGHT IT BROKE THE SUN AND PIECED IT BACK TOGETHER AGAIN " BEFUDDLED by this whisper I realized, an angel was spreading love inside us three. I gifted her my black beaded rosary, I can still see her bright eyes, at times liquid with tears at times bursting with laughter, sigh, sorry for the length.

An introspective poem of rare quality. You have some fantastic lines in this poem, Richard:

"She became nothing to find something."

The rays of hope that shines at the end of the poem are uplifting to this noble spirit.

Fine work here.

Truly the portrait of a troubled woman who always hope for the best but often was taken advantage of for that very openness and softness that made her so beguiling.

Beautifully rendered. One can almost see her beyond the portrait.
