Hope for a Better Tomorrow...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

The loss of a family member (or a loved one) is a great loss. But a greater loss is what dies within us while we live. An honest look in the mirror...

.
It’s this place
I find myself in now,
past the youth markers,
and the resilient greener grass
once buoyant beneath the
cleats of ball chasers…
.
It’s the mountain
I once saw myself being,
dithering now on a distant horizon,
good intentions becoming the name of
a drink in some dingy bar in the Hebrides…
.
It’s all the many quirks I inherited
from too much struggling,
quirks that became
weapons I wield
(at times)
against everything I feel threatened by…
.
The cheerless awareness that sometimes
I am unconcerned with the feelings of others,
the songs of their hearts, their hopes and dreams,
and being loath to embrace their dysfunction
always, for fear of becoming like them…
.
Indifference causing me (at times)
to become so withdrawn
and self-absorbed,
that I can’t taste anything
but stomach, in a grim quest to
find the grail I once fancied in my youth…
.
So living has made me
a praying man
trusting Holy writ,
rational and meditative,
a believer with unflagging faith,
a brooding dreamer seeking
wisdom in nature,
a measured poet
embracing stylization
and structure as a discipline,
and who purges life’s struggles
as easily as breathing.
A book writer
creating characters
who love and respect
one another, and who live
the adventures he’d expected
he would experience before
life turned a treadmill.
A man freed from
all enchantments, but who still
refuses to give up on what he once saw.
A disenchanted optimist, living among
the hoi polloi, and the well-heeled,
still searching for honor
and integrity
in a chesty
egocentric world,
faulting Beatlemania
and all those early examples
of success and happiness for the
pedagogy that gave life (a kind of) hope
that would prove bootless in the long-run…
.
STILL…. I haven’t given up yet, NO, and
there’s still living hope for a better tomorrow…

DESPITE THE GNAWING PRESENT CONDITIONS, ON EVERY LEVEL, THAT SURROUND, WHICH STEM FROM THE EXPERIENCES OF LIFE THAT ONCE SURROUNDED...THIS IS 'EXACTLY' WHAT FERVENT PRAYER AND THE POWERFUL WORD OF GOD DOES FOR ONE; POURS HOPE IN EARTHEN VESSELS! HOPE THAT MAKEST NOT ASHAMED...AS ONE IS STRENGTHENED NOT TO GIVE UP BUT, TO PRESS-ON, EVER LOOKING TO A BETTER 'TOMORROW', INDEED! HALLELUJAH AND THANK YOU, JESUS! SO VERY POWERFUL, THIS KEEPER. THANK YOU, RICHARD. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Richard, I read this outstanding poem twice. It spoke so deeply to my heart. I have found myself more than once in the place you speak of. Once when my father died, once when my mother died, when my sister died and when a precious friend passed. The last time was when I left a bad marriage and lost my sons because of it. At each of these junctions I felt so disoriented and desperately sad. I know whereof you speak and I know it's not the easiest place to live in or to write about. Thank you for sharing. Each time we honestly share our hearts we build a bridge of understanding and caring.

A very introspective trip that reveals more about life,
and love, and living through the eyes of poetry in general, and from
the mind of a grandmaster of this artform in particular.

That is a most thorough self confession in a prose poem that I have seen in a long time. Still struggling but hopeful that things will turn out all right. I especially enjoy the ending.

Ah, yes there is still hope for a better tomorrow as long as we have breath in us and Faith to restore us every day. I love your honesty and your talented creative ways. May you always be nurtured in nature, and find comfort in those closest to your heart. I always look forward to seeing what you have penned next, :) take care, be good
