Wisdom & Loss....

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

For those friends and family who have gone on before. Thankfully, each has left behind something lasting of themselves. And though none of them are here now, the good they shared, is still a light that remains bright, in spite of their silence. Image: Cederberg

Poem Artwork
A life that’s built on sand and lies
Will fail in stormy weather,
And in the end, most will despise
A life that’s built on sand and lies,
And though love tries, in fresh disguise,
To sew two souls together,
A life that’s built on sand and lies
Will fail in stormy weather…
.
A spited heart will often rail
In soulful vindication,
To criticize, or to assail,
A spited heart will often rail,
But till revenge completely fails
And one finds liberation,
A spited heart will often rail
In soulful vindication…
.
Too many friends have died this year
Passed on from here to there
All kindred souls we loved so dear
Too many friends have died this year
And though we grieve them far and near
And fete their gifts and flair
Too many friends have died this year
Passed on from here to there…
.
We’ll bid them farewell in chill winter’s air
Where time spent was lessened in pure-white expanse
When all wishes spoken could never repair
We’ll bid them farewell in chill winter’s air,
Affording those promises, most squandered unfair,
In all shifting shadows of hope and romance,
We’ll bid them farewell in chill winter’s air
Where time spent was lessened in pure-white expanse…

So many have departed this earth leaving us with fond memories and some not so fond. But as we think back, we realize that each relationship was meant to teach us more about ourselves. Thank you for sharing your heart moving piece with me, Richard, God bless :)

I love the circular form of repeated phrases as a reminder and a furtherance of the story you are telling through poetry. Yes, too many lives lost these past few years!

Such a beautiful tribute. One thing so hard about getting old is having those you love leave.

Beautiful, compassionate and deeply heart touching words Richard…
Our lives are still lit by the passing on of dear friends and family
whose goodness and example still helps us onwards to live our
best lives possible…

Incredibly compassionate and deeply heartfelt Richard. This world's completely at a crossroads of great transitional change like never before in history.. An old friend who I consider an earth angel in every sense once told me to take the gift of the gift or and person in every experience, learn profoundly from it about your soul, then move on because that is what the circle of life is..And as we understand this circle we understand things in billions of new levels.. I am deeply so sorry for your losses. I know this pain all too well. But I do know the soul never dies and we live on with God and His Son who gave us healing, resurrection power, forgiveness and this is our hope of our beautiful reunion.

Richard, worthy praise is due. I particularly liked and was moved by your early stanzas in which you metaphorically painted a picture of some lives that might have been lived with too much trust in the entitlement and expectation of comfort and safety, when only through effort to make the right decisions can one escape a life "built on sand and lies" Interesting how you combined the tangible sand with the more intangible embrace of lies as an interrelated foundation. Further into the poem, you showed your empathy and acceptance of both the virtuous life and the often less truthful and respectful life lived. And your closing stanza truly brought the variables of life together in a praise-worthy acknowledgment that most lives are not lived perfectly. Well done.

An ode to the fallen. The repetition worked. The mood was somber and reflective. It seems like funerals always happen when it's pouring cold rain or there's a snowstorm.

I have noticed an inordinate number of mentors, friends, and family falling from sight recently. And, as far as I know, none of them had Covid-19. But it's also interesting to note that some of the liars and cheats have had their lives catch up with them a long time ago and are also gone. The way Karma should work, and apparently, does.
