One Drop at a Time...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

An older piece, written a few years following a great failure in my life. Never before (or since then) has there been such a flood through my heart and mind as that experience caused. I stood defenseless in the mirror during those days, and more honestly naked than I’ve ever been before. I believe the only way you can ever truly learn from your mistakes is to honestly admit that you made them, and then know exactly what part you played, and never play the same part again.

Poem Artwork
One drop at a time,
my life collides with the canvas.
Splashes of fleeting form,
tangled together with
fibers of unfolding
circumstance,
come into view…
Clinging past failures
fester on blackening rocks,
withered and bent they return to
me [at times] in brokenhearted echoes….
.
Like a relentless
river flowing forward,
Faith whispers in the winds of suffering,
straining eyes searching, but never
seeing the unseen path…
.
Having known so much,
(but so little) my
heart sags
weary under the burdens of
years spent searching. Embracing and
believing ancient words that guide
and comfort, but floundering still
beneath an unseen enemy’s lies.
Wretchedly I reach up, and
cry out for Wisdom’s
love and direction,
.
But still….
.
One drop at a time,
my life collides with the canvas,
as an image of one man is formed -
laughing
crying
afraid
loving
hating
fearless
warring
awkwardly expressing
the unseen through the tangible,
as life (painted in words and sounds)
groan to be born and shared….
.
Life eternal has
taken residence in me,
twisted together inexorably
with the fibers of who I am and will be.
My life belongs to the unseen Love,
and in ancient words
His story sings….
.
One drop at a time, His life
collides with my living canvas, and
quietly, my stubborn soul learns the melodies….
.

INDEED, RICHARD. JUSTIFICATION IS INSTANT. BUT SANCTIFICATION IS OVER A PERIOD OF TIME. AND IT IS A PAINFUL TIME OF UPS AND DOWNS. INS AND OUTS. TEN FEET FORWARD BUT SEVEN FEET BACK. LOOKING AT THE PERSON IN THE MIRROR IS NEVER EASY BUT THERE IS NO GETTING AROUND IT...IT MUST BE DONE. WE MUST FACE WHAT WE DID WRONG, REPENT, CALL ON GOD AND PROCEED. REALIZING, THAT IT WILL NOT BE THE LAST TIME THAT WE ERR BUT WITH GOD'S HELP...WE WILL GET IT RIGHT...ONE DROP AT A TIME...LITTLE BY LITTLE, AND AS THE WORD SAYS...GROWING FROM GLORY TO GLORY WE PRESS AND REACH FOR THE MARK OF THE PRIZE OF THE HIGH CALLING OF GOD IN JESUS CHRIST. METAPHORICALLY SPEAKING...YES, WE LEARN TO SING!!!! AMEN. RICH AND STIMULATING, FOR WHO HONESTLY CANNOT RELATE TO THIS FINE WORK? I DARE TO SAY, NOT ONE PERSON! THANK YOU FOR SHARING.LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

A superb rendering. Artful, insightful, painful, but redeeming.

There are no mistakes that anyone does that are forgotten, unless one is pathological. And expressing the pain you had to go through once you realized what you had done wrong in poetry is one of the best therapies there are.

I can see this poem you wrote in 2000 still resonates with you, today.

I believe those ancient words have guided you through much. May they keep helping you express your thoughts and clear your mind.

A purposeful poem that touches upon a subject that we all must deal with, namely, admitting and then facing the mistakes that we make as we make them and then making every effort to learn from the mistake, never to make it again. Certainly it helps to have a "belief system" that one can rely on, so that, as you wrote: "Life eternal has taken residence in me..." Living one drop at a time makes the ocean of our individual lives.

well Richard, your melodies are amazing and that soul instrument seems to have seasoned with time. Giving us a beautiful song of life, and word. I enjoyed this very much, have a blessed day, glad you were able to express that time of your life, with such expression and maturity. :)

Beautifully penned and on a subject I know well and have also attempted to ground said response in poetry. Mistakes today are so often made to look purposeful and not mistakes at all. Such is the pandemic rage of false living we see everyday by those who have not yet learned that the lesson will be dealt over and over again until it's learned. You have done well in making that apparent and worthy of informing others so well. Thank you for posting.

Thank you so deeply for this write..
I'm so sorry you had to go through extreme painful pruning in the back side of a desert Bro. I know this all too well and He has the perfect plan for you...... Your desert shaking was your making. I deeply treasure the great thinkers and their thoughts on transformation and within. One author I cherish is Helen Keller, a blind woman who has such beautiful wisdom understanding. She says the best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart. Your heart was changed forever from that... Thank God for His Son's love, blood, mercy and forgiveness... Life is ever about change and evolution as the caterpillar finally grows into a glorious butterfly for all the world to see~
Peace, Dove.
