Please Don't Misunderstand Me...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

PORTRAYAL 15. I was in my mid-20’s, living in Santa Barbara, in college parttime, and playing the nightclub circuit in my 7-piece jazz rock band, ‘FEEL’. Sadie was an acoustic guitarist, playing and singing in one of the coffee bars, and also pursuing her PhD. As it turned out… the night we met, some strange kind of magic happened, and for a while it truly seemed like we were a match made in heaven. But what a mess I ended up making of it. Through it all, I learned that most people really don’t care about how gifted or prolific or popular you are, they mostly only care about how you make them feel. Seeing ourselves for who (or what) we really are, is far healthier than seeing ourselves for who we think we are. Thanks for teaching me to see me in a way that changed me for the better. ACROSTIC poetry

Poem Artwork
Looking back…
.
Perhaps it started out one-sided,
Liberating you from all that I discerned,
Expecting more from my efforts than I should,
And never actually knowing a whole lot about you
Save those things I thought were revealing intuitions
Exposing what I assumed we both wanted,
.
Did I see your intentions wrong,
Or did I whelm your heart with insights?
Not intentionally mind you, but perhaps me
Taking and assuming too much left you numb…
.
Maybe I expected you to see me
In all the ways I envisioned myself.
Sifting through my musical genius, and
Understanding my deepest mysteries was
Never what you wanted though. Still, I was protective.
Don’t be duped by dabblers, I said. You know that
Every field is polluted with dilettantes and users.
Repugnant lot they are, manipulating to
Satisfy their victims with frivolous insights; all
Tantamount to wet cardboard and watery coffee.
Actually, I freaked when you dumped me for a drummer.
Not that I was all that, but I wonder, still, at times, honestly,
Did I push you away because I was always too sure of myself?
.
Most definitely, you taught me something about affinities,
Everyone needs to feel loved, understood, and special... Everyone.

THE PORTRAYAL SERIES: Poetiprose insights concerning my immediate family and old friends (alive or dead). This series will also address certain of the actors, artists, musicians, and writers I worked with in college, or professionally, that were influential (in one way or another) in shaping the man I am today.

A REFLECTION ON THE 'THINGS' OF YOUR YESTERDAY...THAT IS, THE THINGS THAT TAUGHT AND MOLDED YOU INTO WHO YOU ARE TODAY. EVERY NOW AND THEN...ONE DOES REMENISS ABOUT SUCH IMPRESSIONABLE THINGS. THE ONE THAT TOUCHED, BENT AND CHISLED THEM...SO THAT THEY COULD APPRECIATE AND THUS EMBRACE...THAT WHICH GOD HAD WAITING IN THE WINGS, AND HAS NOW BROUGHT INTO THEIR LIVES...TODAY. USUALLY, THEY ARE REMEMBERED TENDERLY, INDEED, AS IN THIS LOVELY TRIBUTE TO YOUR PAST. THANKS FOR SHARING, RICHARD. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Neat idea for your series, Richard. Lots of cloth for that creation. It’s good you wrote this detailed introduction, and what a gem of a portrait you found! I like that you include the barometer for personal relations being: ‘assessing people by means of how you feel around them.’ There is an old ache to this piece, or the return of the finger to the precious scar, how you got it and who gave it to you. Great line: “Tantamount to wet cardboard and watery coffee.” ~~ djl

Such a frank (and human) portrayal of the poet in his tribute of another and what he w4as able to learn about himself. So well done.

It is amazing how we pretty much forget what people do most of the time but we never forget how people made us feel. Beautiful and powerful mémoire.... Let me know if you have a book about your memories with others and this gives me inspiration to write one day when I am more free. Have a glorious day you and Michelle, ~

wow ! You have a way of perceiving people far deeper than most
and it serves you well when you are trying to achieve a most
delicate portrayal of another human soul. Your honesty and your insightful ways make for great meaningful poems, I really enjoyed this Richard, God bless !

Well, I wrote a long review and it disappeared. This is one of your most revealing pieces. Not so much as a confession of sorts, but of the principles guiding your life. It's very difficult for most to think such thoughts, let alone convey them in a poetic form and connect with the conscious reader, but also provides grounding and reflection for the poet. I consider the latter most important. Too many poets avoid any revealing of inner chaos, choosing instead to cloak most thoughts with flowers and pretty skies syndrome of poetry writing. To have this kind of self-evaluation as raw as it comes across is indeed a quest well rec'd by this reader. Bravo.
