Up to the High Places...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

With profound thankfulness and respect, I dedicate this piece to Dr. Degani, and Cardiologists Dr. Lee and Dr. Appis, (along with all the gifted nurses) instrumental in helping me navigate back from the brink of heart failure the last few days of Dec, and the first week of Jan. Your love and caring helped renew my faith in humanity. Forever grateful.

Poem Artwork
(I) THE STRUGGLE…
How silent
and stern these
straining days pass
where, at times, in open tyranny,
scattered thoughts scramble
for measured application…
.
O dismay,
each day
embracing the
great word WAIT,
this (at times) tragic fate
impelling the mind to activate
with something other than
a wearied wide road
worn smooth…
.
Another fluster
putting glory on,
hoping to rediscover
where newness is apparent,
and where honest happiness is
more than a shadow of things past…
.
Throughout life
I’ve known thinking
that piled up (at times)
like a day’s dead sanctities.
Thought quakes pricked with panic,
like vexed birds flailing on windowpanes.
Thoughts, in rising currents, wild with leaves,
trembling in trepidation at the tumults of the day,
but clinging to where Earth and Heaven meet
crying: ‘O Most High – Creator, from
whom flows the substance of
all fresh thinking,
help me bear this anguish’…
.
(II) AN APPEAL…
O breath of life, breathe
on this mind that broods (at
times) so helpless and unnerved…
.
…From the utmost corners,
O divine breath,
command my lassitude
to drift from me like a whisper
.
Preserve me from these penumbras
where despair shrieks in the belly of clouds,
and where from all dark-lipped furrows,
hubris strolls in chatoyant silk
.
…From the four winds,
come O breath,
to breathe upon these
outworn motivations, that
this failing heart could rise up again
to write rather of life, than of death
.
…From the uttermost parts,
O eternal breath of life,
breathe on me
that I might
suspire,
as an Eagle
stirring its nest,
hovering over its young,
spreading forth its majestic wings
to carry each of them up to the high places,
for it is your breath (alone) O God that sustains me…

DEAR RICHARD...THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I AM LEAVING REVIEWS SINCE THE VERY FIRST DAYS OF JANUARY SO...I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT YOUR ILLNESS AT ALL! BUT AS I AM WRITING THE THOUGHT CAME...'YOU'RE NOT THE 'MASTER PHYSICIAN' YOU DIDN'T NEED TO KNOW'. THUS, I AM ELATED THAT GOD, WHO NEVER LEFT YOUR SIDE STOOD GUARD AND BROUGHT YOU THROUGH! LIKE YOU, I AM TERRIBLY GRATEFUL FOR THE PHYSICIANS THAT HE USED TO HEAL YOU, MY FRIEND, AND I AM PRAISEING ALMIGHTY GOD FOR GUIDING THEM IN DOING HIS PERFECT WILL IN YOUR LIFE. AND YES...THROUGH EVERY KIND OF TRIAL, WHEN WE PUT OUR UTMOST FAITH IN HIM ...HE BRINGS US THROUGH ON A HIGHER PLANE. I PRAY, IN JESUS NAME, THAT YOU GO FORTH IN THE CONTINUED HEALING STRENGTH AND POWER OF YOUR FAITH AND LOVE OF ALMIGHTY GOD, WHICH I CAN TELL BY YOUR WORDS HAS GROWN IMMEASURABLY! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+ INSPIRATIONS.

I offer my empathy for what happened to you in December. The heat of it seems to have entered into these authentic expressions of the tumult’s afterwards. Pain and fright catapult humans into profundity, which is present in these stanzas, especially stanza #4. That #4 is tremendous! ~~ djl. P.S. - thank you for providing me so many vocabulary words to look up….I really like that!

Oh my Heavenly Father- The enemy tried to take you BUT God stepped in! Hallelujah bro you are Ok...!!!! I'm so deeply grateful you are here alive Richard !!!!!!!!! I'm so thankful Almighty! So deeply sorry you've gone through this hell! You will be so much stronger, wiser than ever before, trust me! Life will be so much more beautiful, special and meaningful for you and your precious Michelle at your side will give you such strength! In time you will restore your physical health with lots of walks...Wow, I see and sense your soul, heart, mind and self I can tell you are soaring with wings of the eagle. I just got back from being in Nashville and was finally able to look at my email and before I opened it I had a vision with a bald eagle for the last few days and had the words I was musing to write later, then I opened this up!!! Bam!!! Also I have prayed long and hard for you both for your protection and safety away from the brush fires like in LA... You have been on my mind and prayers many days now hoping all is well and no dry brush in your county will attack any of you ad your neighbor's. Been so upset- the world's a mess but God is our sustainer, our provider, our healer. I'm so thankful your work on earth isn't finished yet that many need your wisdom, light, sober minded teachings and Christ love aura. Stay well my precious friend. You, Michelle, Garret and the boys are in my prayers. In Christ forever love agape, Jo

Glad that you have come back from the brink. It's a wake up call for many men.

The bad news today announced a new approach to what they call, "Heart disease." While they blame smoking, the greatest cause is arterial congestion. Obesity and high blood pressure.

I have none of those, so I will suffer until a very old age when I die, perhaps in my 90s.

But for people with High blood pressure or the onset of diabetes, they can die almost anytime from a heart attack and that way not have to go through long periods of pain and misery before they die.

As my uncle at 102 called out, "Nurse, get me a bucket, I want to kick it! "

We are but mortals, with all the ups and down that come with the human condition. A truly heart-felt and deeply wrought poem.

Richard, your poem touched me so deeply. I'm so sorry for what you suffered and thankful you are better. I certainly understand the depths you write of. Be well, My Friend. Parying for you always.

I have yet to read a more perfect prayer to our Lord, Richard, :)

Although there are differences in some our belief convictions, this poem speaks loudly of creation and its preservation. Your choice of words were spot on and the images conveyed encourangeing to anyone allowing trust in the power of creation. Your choice, for example, of the eagle and its many leveled values to our apprection of nature and the unselfish devotion to task, to parenting, to survival is outstanding.

Well done, Richard.
