Meyers Creek Beach...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

PORTRAYAL 70. For Michele Elizabeth Cederberg. I am so proud of you for never giving up, and for each day choosing to press forward through the most challenging year of our lives. The bravery, resilience, and courage you exhibited changed me. Your strength and fortitude became a new standard for all those struggling and suffering. I am honored to be the husband of a warrior. January 2026. You are cancer free my love. Praise God!

Poem Artwork
Daybreak
felt endless in
vapory moist air,
the sounds & smells,
& those fleeting moments
involving hummingbirds, there
suddenly in peripheral blurs, singing
happily as they flit past,
‘tchik tchik tchik
tsip tsip
dzik dzik’
.
So we prepare,
and in ritual together
move as one along the sand,
hand in hand,
shoulder to shoulder,
heart to heart, humming
melodies born of love, as we
delight in the pleasantness of
creek and forest and wildflowers,
along where earth and sea
mingle, and where,
on gently sloping shores,
waves fell upon and withdrew
in drone cadence...
.
Along the way,
(as it often is in life)
a glimpse of cycles emerges,
types and shadows in the cries
of gulls vying for a noisome carcass
in frenzied competition to
gorge upon death,
.
so we watched,
instead of turning back,
until the gulls got suspicious . . .
And when
they took flight
bloody mouthed,
her disposition darkened,
and with a pained expression
she remembered her best friend
who had died in tenth grade,
.
so I draw her nearer,
to chase away the sorrow,
but tears fall all the same,
along the imprints of plovers,
and the squiggly markings
of sea turtles,
where we amble
together whispering
about life, and what matters,
as a briny mist flattens our hair,
and sand and pebbles are shuffled
in a constant harmony of change…

Very emotional. I can see why Michelle responded the way she did to the death of some poor creature the gulls were fighting over. Bringing a remembrance of a best friend who died of cancer, yet somehow, she has conquered it. At least, for now.

I know the joy…the tearful joy, of one who has overcome death so many, many years ago.

Very evocative, Richard. While I am not a conventionally religious person, spiritual beliefs completely aside, you've certainly brought out the beauty and healing qualities of communions with nature (as Meyer's Creek Beach) such as this. I am quite familiar with that splendid stretch of South Oregon Coast, having spent considerable time at Gold Beach and vicinity, and apart from conveying a sense of healing natural beauty, it is easy to experience the catharsis that abounds there in something as unstructured and essential as a walk on the beach there. Since I am unfamiliar with your personal affairs, I can't say much about the central subject of this paean to your wife and partner, but I can certainly relate to the deeply integral need all of us have to reassociate with the perfect interaction of oceans and land that Meyers Beach offers all of us. As Odin thoughtfully put it already: "Well done, Richard. May (both of) your coming days be many and satisfying!"

Oh, how many of us approach the subject of love and devotion and attempt to find the words that won't suggest a Hallmark card. You, my friend and poet, have penned a reflection and dedication to love, your wife, and multiple samples of earth's ever giving Nature of love. Splendid choice of eye and ear notices on this beach of memory and continued relevance. In a world so racked with hate and misinformation, this was a welcome break. Your inner being stood out in reverence and respect together with the poet's carefully worded passion for life. Well done, Richard, Very happy for you and your wife. May your days be many.
