This is a very insightful poem, but it would not be so painful if it were not caused by the naked greed of some, and the callousness of those who cheat other people of their hard-earned money. when we bed down with illusions, we awake clothed in self pity's starkness -- in addition to the incredible arrogance of the federal government's vision of housing for everyone, regardless of their ability to pay, individual greed and myopic evaluation of the individual's ability to accumulate spiraling incomes defeated the financial capabilities of an immensely wealthy nation -- so now stagnation stares in the face of a mighty people, capable of climbing out of the doom and rebuilding with sensibility -- permitting the government to nationalize the financial institutions, insurance business, the auto industry and then the oil industry will bring us right where many politicians want us to be -- totally dependent upon the central government providing us with everything --SOCIALISM -- peace and love to you Ron for this wake up call to America -- I hope many get the message and opt for a return to less government control instead of more, which has permitted us to be where we currently are -- JMW
I try not to think about this problem, though ignoring it will not make it go away, I know...I am only working two or three days a week right now...hopefully that won't go away too...ed
We didn't learn anything from the 30's did we? View the documentary In Debt We Trust. What an eye opener. Unfortunately we often get our self esteem from what we have acquired in life. The truth is, we all end up in a cardboard box or a pine box one day and to my knowledge, they don't come with pockets. Loss is so painful, I know.

Excellent and well written. As usual I enjoyed your gift of rhyme and meter and the play and variations you do with words and phrases. I even thought in that first line you may have hinted at an image of the old B&W era movies such as "How Green Was My Valley" or is it coincidence?

Moving and relevant thoughts. Well written too! It is a growing and profoundly sticky wicket, what's happening in this country Ron. My son was laid off from AT&T (he has two kids) and my daughter was also laid off. I believe that I will write something along these lines, thanks for the inspiration.

I'm glad you tackled this real world issue, that's pretty rare in poetry these days. And yet, you made it light, a lyric rhythm that I really enjoyed.
