Doldrums

Somewhere between the two highs,
of the holy day and the passing of time,
there comes a low that we all know,
but not its reason or its rhyme.

Stuffed to the gills, full of ills,
from partying and eating too much.
Must get out of bed, throw out the dead,
cleanup and chuck all this stuff.

Down in the dumps, taking my lumps,
from those critical of my play.
I raise another glass, say "Kiss my..."
as the sun up goes down without delay .

Shopping is recessed, mostly depressed,
still decorated but in despair.
The music plays like the end of days,
stuff coming in, going out, going nowhere.

College bowls are played excess displayed,
time to root for the old alma mater.
With deals at the root, big scandals to boot.
The search for knowledge doesn't matter.

And so we go out in the new snow and shout,
"Get me out of this mortgage so shoddy!"
Freezing our toes and falling on our nose,
we retire to the fireplace for a toddy.

For new years will come, old will go,
there will be days with rain, slush, and snow.
But, as slowly the old days turn into new,
our old friends, the doldrums, are here to stew.

Hello Ronald,

"...there will be days with rain" and lots of storms too- for life is a constant active change- ("after the rain the sun".) New days and new things always come, and new beginnings come with them, with a lot of new friends too. (Some are really pretty.) Cheers!!!

I liked this! Your "Doldrums" speak to me of truth, but your forgot all the damn little package plastic teatsy thingy's that break off and hide into the carpet, that is, until I come by! OUCH!

Yea, but they never can last long at this time of year - and here we are into the New One. Life on the internet is a headlong rush to keep up. But sometimes I think it's a merry-go-round. And somehow your "Doldrums" also seem so cyclical. Good versing as usual...

It's funny, I am this eternal optimist, yet I can't stand New Year's, and I think it is because of all the superficial hopes built on those days, instead of small things done throughout the year with honesty, and it makes me feel depressed that the real meaning behind Christmas, if celebrated instead of the materialistic side, would really make hope for the new year a possibility, but these aren't the things people hope for in new year's because they are not things at all-sorry to go one, your poem just got me thinking, lol- Happy New Year!! LOL- Michelle

and the crowd of angry shoppers went home with the triffling pledge
to harvest the best gift, the best deal, the best of anything....but failing to see their blood pressure exposed them to yet another doctors visit, or the hospital from that squabble over a flat screen sale, yes an early bird special...oh the target of the media to tantalize & torture with promise of Merry Merry Merry....
Ahhhh...Pass me a cocktail please...not that I participate in the mad dash rush of "Doldrums", but I do like to have a cocktail anyway & watch them :)

Loved Your Poeticized Discription of "Doldrums"
