I'm fine. I just think that the weather
is a great metaphor for the situation
many wage earners find themselves
in today with the rapid redistribution
of wealth from the middle class to the
wealthy, creating over half of the
working population with no net worth--
the unemployed and working poor.

Below Zero

The sun is shining bright,
but it's cold in this room.
I should be smiling from it,
but I'm under a gray gloom.

I've tried so hard,
these last few years.
But haven't succeeded,
except my worst fears.

I got that pink slip,
to my great surprise.
I thought I was their best worker,
but it was all a pack of lies.

I went on unemployment,
and it helped for a while,
but my wife left me and took the kids,
so it's hard for me to smile.

I applied and applied for many a job,
went online and tried to hobnob,
turned down by too many to remember,
finally got work in late September.

Its sales on commission,
and I'm not selling much.
Spending more time on contacts,
trying to keep in touch.

It's cold in this room,
and they've cut off the heat.
It won't be very long,
and I'll be on the street.

They say it's below zero,
but will be better next week.
I've been below zero so long,
I feel tired and so weak.

If I make it to spring,
maybe I'll feel better,
but I can't count on anything,
in this kind of weather.

For much too long did the winter freeze hang on
the wind chill had at times seemed well below absolute zero
The damned cold froze my well and it froze my soul as well
As the Arctic blasts roared screaming o'er the plains...

Ah, this is just part of the price we pay for living in Paradise...or wherever the Hell we are, nicht war?

"Below zero for so long." That aligns with my reality too. Hope this stays a lessened reality for us both; done with unwavering form.

Thanks, Ron!

The "cold" comes in many forms doesn't it? Especially during the winter do the unemployed, the homeless, disabled and elderly come to mind. Life is hard enough without the thorns. A sad but honest look at it.

Far too many in our nation have been Below Zero for far too long,
And far too many of our so called 'leaders' today see nothing wrong.

Sadly this is true in every town and city in every country...the poor just keep getting poorer...and nothing is for certain because the rug can be hauled out from under you in a heartbeat...well done, Ronald!

The sickening existence of far too many in our well-off societies where the fair distribution of wealth can no longer be counted upon by governments who care more about corporations than corpses. :( Twists my guts. xx

I have been telling people these are shaky times. That was before we factored in the cold. My heating bill doubled last month and this month is even colder. On VA benefits I'm getting poorer by the day. M.True

I'm glad you let us know that you're ok. As if January isn't hard enough to get through, this scenario is played out over and over throughout our nation.

Unfortunately every right the American worker fought for is being taken away one at a time. this country has turned bake the clock on wages for the working class by at least 30 years. this poem tells the sad state our jobs situation is in. Well done.

Keep fighting the good fight, Ron. Sometimes it is all there is. But the worm turns, the wheel in the sky does, too. There is great courage in simple endurance. The concept of Zero was created because ancients realized that even kings had their master, that the 'one' had a precedent, the Zerith. Those who created our Arabic numeral system used it so we could count beyond our fingers, beyond ourselves. Being 'below zero' for a poet, a fighter like you is to offer up a new problem, project ... a job. Be well, Jan

In response to the question “Why should I study economics?” a wise old professor once said “Some day when you are down and out, hungry and unemployed, at least you will understand why.” I sent a letter today to six of the most powerful people in America with a summary of how to fix this mess. I don't expect a reply. But by God I let them know: I understand!

The plight of the unemployed (obviously wanting to work, rather than be on unemployment--much to the chagrin of the big mouthed Right)is one of those embarrassments to this country that job-makers shrug and continue outsourcing what could be done here. As you say, the room is getting cold, and most likely will stay cold through the summer.

Your take on our present problems in this country are right in step with the way I feel about it all, and you have managed to express it quite well with this marvelous poetic piece. I do hope there's a better day a-comin'. Perhaps, like you say, things will be lookin' up, come spring. Something's gotta give...sometime...somehow. Thanks for a job well done, my good man.

The economic situation here in the Uk is the same, and more welfare cuts are being implemented very soon...rather than being helped and assisted ... humiliation is often the name of the game....There was supposed to be a safety net...now it's just one big hole....

Yep, the weather is a killer, literally, but the mind is your worst enemy. Always. There are sad stories galore these days, like there is always. But in the midst of them are successes. I try not to lay the blame on the rich, although lately I have leaned that way for want of a better villain.
