I find that many poets use poetry to lament about their misgivings…

 Cup of Tea

You may live in fantasyland,
where you escape to be free,
I much prefer wonderful raw reality,
fantasy is not my cup of tea.

You may think that a designer drug,
will make you fly like an angel or bee,
and sing like a songbird's sweet melody.
Our bodies were not designed for drugs,
you're fooling you, but you're not fooling me.

You may indulge your favorite food,
and then lament you're out of shape.
You must exercise, my friend,
your mind and body to that end,
and not succumb to feed your fate.

Whatever your addiction, I don't want to hear,
how you've tried and tried, but never got clear.
I'm not the cause of your selfish affliction,
only you can stop a stupid compulsion.

You may blame others for their misdeeds,
while you live your life the same.
While you over spend your capital endlessly,
not living the life you claim.

Ignorance is bliss and you always enlist,
because it's what everyone else does.
Act without thinking because it's, "right."
It helps you get through each long lonely night.

But in the end, we all must face the truth,
the life we live is all that we have.
Looking to save it somewhere else,
is simply ludicrous, my friend.

So if you savor a choice of fine wines,
a connoisseur of coffees and fine white lines,
that's not my cup of tea, my friend,
we're not fooling anyone in the end.

I prefer reality too, Ron... and coffee over tea :) Enjoyed your poem very much.

I have to admit Ron, I love fantasy but I only write about it. I live in the real world. Wonderful poem. We just have to strive to make our reality as good as possible in ways that aren't harmful. Enjoyed.

Yeah, reality is exciting enough, you know? Don't need drugs for that. Beautiful write, I see where you're coming from. I've always been reading your poems. This one certainly also belongs to them.

Well conceived and written, Ron. How boring it would be if we all drank the same tea but, on the other hand, respect for others' tastes and diversity is everything. What we need is one big melting pot, as the old 70s song lyric goes, in terms of tolerance, but unity is definitely not uniformity. As you rightly say, we alone are responsible for our own choices in terms of cause and effect. Effective work here. xx

confessional poetry is really quite played out but still has a therapeutic platform to those who write it ... i personally find it a tad boring ... but there are exceptions ...

We are here on a life journey....and it's up to us...
personally I think 'a cup of tea' is a good cure along with a hot bath (agreeing with Sylvia Plath here) for most ills...
And a night sky filled with stars...what greater 'high' than this?...but each to his own...
I have not trod in my friends moccasins...

A warning, Ron...? Well not for me, for I will do as I wish no matter what anyone says...to be honest though if I got high as much as anybody thinks I do, I would be definitely dead of of over exposure to drugs...I like to write about it, but rarely anymore do so...take care bro'...-e-

Well written, with a lot to consider, but I agree with George. I think mankind has always looked for ways to alter his state of conciousness.

Very interesting work. In my line of work sometime it gets very tedious to listen to the same old grips and complaints from people that have only themselves to blame for their circumstances.

So…I guess you never watch movies, or read fiction, watch a flickering fire, or let your mind wander (or wonder) at the stars, or sit and watch the ocean’s wave crashing on the rocks while you contemplate fortresses or hot love affairs. Nope, not Ron. All that is just a waste of time. But aren’t those activities the source of romance, and travels, and explorations? Don’t they inspire great novels like Hawaii, or memorable love affairs such as Romeo and Juliet, or beautiful poetry like To Celia (“Drink to me only with thine eyes”)? You cannot mask your true feelings in poetry, and then deny them at the same time. When logic and poetry clash, do not forsake one for the other…Oh yes, those are just impressions, not facts. Probably senility taking control of my faculties.

There's a lot of truth here, Ron. A lot to consider here. I think everyone has their "pet sins," be they minor or miserable. U have to be careful in trying to remove the splinter from someone else's eye I don't ignore the 2 by 4 in my own.

God bless,
