The uncounted have no lifeboats as they float through their lives.

Uncounted

On the path to anonymous,
the uncounted go their way.
Live each day in their routine,
not counting as they play.

For them this life is follow,
to do what others say.
Afraid they will not "fit in,"
unless they join in and pray.

That they have done the "right thing,"
by their friends and family.
That they have guarded tradition,
and maintained the powers that sway.

They go through life in passages,
obeying every required and prescribed link.

Baptism
Catechism/Confirmation/Bat Mitzvah
Graduation/College/Training/Military
Job/Business/Career
Marriage/Divorce
Children/Family
Holidays (Holy Days)
Keeping up with the Joneses
The American Dream (A New Home)
Clubs/Affiliations/Parties/Certifications
Public Service/Charities/Volunteering
Games/Pastimes/Hobbies
Chasing the Dream/Losing/Failure
Job Loss/Bankruptcy/Foreclosure
Illness/Infirmity/Hospitalization/Dependency
Funeral/Legacy

As if on a mindless treadmill,
touching every goal post,
and not even having to think.

Powerless to make any difference,
just one more cog in the wheel.
Consuming and babymaking along the way,
going through motions without feel.

There's always been power in numbers,
and the uncounted play their part.
Whether it be fodder for the war machine,
or their unwavering support of clout.

There is no use in complaining,
if you are among the uncounted masses,
it's time to start thinking realistically,
and get up off your asses.

This is wonderful Ron. A poem to read again and again. When I beheld your list of rites of passages I just couldn't help but think how life is a series of losses. Well, losses and gains, mostly losses once you become a parent. Good writing!

Indeed! Your summation made me laugh. Enjoyed.

I do so believe there is power in numbers...this power manifests itself in many different ways. I also think that only we33 dan define ourselves as individuals as among the uncounted masses or if we wield some clout. I also agree that we must get up and at it! Evocative write. Well done.
Many blessings!

A very good poetic analysis, Ron, but I think the times they are a-changing these days, what with internet mobilisation for change and people-power standing up for what it has decided it believes in or forging its own paths. Now as never before we can live solely for ourselves in our own universe of one if we want to, in terms of choice of everything from music station to what happens when we die. Well, health, politics and finances apart! The internet offers us a world of opportunity and possibility - if we can tear ourselves away from the computer to go live it! :) xx

Wow! Ron you touched my very soul! I think like you. I analyse things before following. Truth is, the only people who have ever made any remarkable difference in this world, had a mind of their own not sheepishly following others without taking time to analyse things. I believe that's what God would want as well.

I love this Ron. It is no fun being a robot and it will eventually kill you. We have a mind, heart and a soul and should be on fire daily with anticipation and expectation! Peace!!!

...it's down to the curious way in which you chose to deploy
your words...intriguing...catching imagination...expressing wonderful
sentiment...
Some need to be reminded that to achieve something...effort
is all it takes!
Sooo...break the spell of doing nothing...running own life
as the voiceless face in the crowd...
A mountain to climb?...Don't sit there...do something for yourself
...society...country...Stand up and be counted...make human
sound...discover you have a voice...
Thank you Ron, for sharing your poem that articulates boldness
and understanding...we both read from the same page...poem
to be counted as ...absolutely exceptional...

a perspicacious poetic lesson yet historically we have always counted on the uncounted to keep life afloat and yes they have always complained ...

Love your last stanza - if only we could get far more to 'get up off their asses' - what a great nation we could have.

I find the reviews already written have really said it. All I can add that by taking a whimsical concept you have made the Plutocrats more ridiculous than any other style could have. I don't comment on American politics but have to say that this could unfortunately be Australia.
well done friend.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, bed....breakfast, lunch, dinner, bed...breakfast, lunch, dinner, DEAD!!! The only difference between a rut anad a grave are the dimensions. Unfortunately the kleptocrats running this country have perfected the art of making the American masses vote against their best inte4ests.

I have never followed other people's "traditions"..............Sure, I've been ridiculed for picking and choosing what I want to do in my own way. Your last line says it all. Mama like!

From my perspective, this is Ron Hull at his best! But if I used
the sequence in your mindless treadmill I would be down to the last
two items (funeral/legacy). So I keep going back to Chasing a Dream and that is usually connected in some way with sex. I'm not complaining...

It always amazes me, how some people can fall into a rut and then be comfortable there. On the other hand, I've always wanted a bumper sticker that read, You are now keeping up with the Schafers.
Well done.

Astutely stated. Avoiding cynicism, but remaining realistic, the chances of anything changing, whether on our feet or shackled to our recliner mind set, remains the question that is gathering more moss in the shade of denial. Again, well stated.
