Today started out to be quite dreary. The sun just appeared as I finished my first draft of the poem.

Dreary

A moodiness appears on days like this,
when darkness hangs upon the sky.

When gloom and doom roil in clouds,
as they scud angrily upon their high.

Where down below a pall hangs over,
darkening, dreary, depressing, scene.

A putrid, pallid, pitied pattern of pain,
slides in over slippery slopes unseen.

Fading landscape's melancholy façade,
coloring mind's most murky thought.

Into dark and dreary, tearful and bleary,
states of being so often overwrought.

No comforting thoughts can break the spell,
dreary's got a hold of one's mind in hell.

Alcohol burns and the fire's flame tries to quell,
those deep dark memories only time would tell.

Until the sun, once again, returns to light,
dreary will reign in the half-light of night.

Rays of its splendor will peek from the clouds.
Mind will light up and chase away dread.

Once again, lighting up hope, just ahead.

Drear slows the pace
Allows us to face
Corners without glow
Life grinding and low
But I know you'll rise
Write thoughts that surprise.
and as in the past
Illumined what's vast

So you're getting alot of rain down your way, are you? Living in NJ with all the rain we seem to get I can understand any depression one might get from dealing with the darkness, though as you said light will again be just up ahead...Enjoy the darkness & the rain, for it is Nature's own light...-ed-

The rhythm and mood of the whole poem reminds me of Poe's, "The Raven." And your repeated use of alliteration gives the whole piece the feel of a beating heart. I like the entire poem from beginning to end. Well done.

Many of us have dreary days filled with turmoil and what evers. Once the sun starts to shine many things can change for the better. The weather can sometimes affect ones moods.....M

Being very affected by the weathers mood, and having had SAD since 1991, your words ring very true for me...
This morning is dreary here in UK, but with the promise of Sunshine later...thus enough to keep spirits from becoming too dreary...
Like John, I like your use of alliteration...
An enjoyable and thought provoking piece...

Yes, interesting that our poems overlap in a way, at least the cloudy day part. I confess to being somewhat jaded in favor of the cloudy day after living for years under the relentless sun in these desert climes. Oh, how I miss those cloudy days. You describe them well here. Love the alliteration by the way that works quite well. But those clouds don't depress me, they fill me with moody joy. It's the sun that sometimes scorches my brain.

PS: It is interesting that the word for umbrella in Arabic is "shamsiyyah", the initial letters, "shams", mean the sun. So an umbrella in these places is an instrument that protects you from the sun, and not the non-existent rain.

You took me on a journey from the depths of Draconian morbidity to edge of promise and joy. Whew, quite as poetic journey? May peace and love be always with you my friend. Jon Michael

You brought "Dreary" to life big time, Ron. "Dreary." A word with many different meanings, with one consistent thought . . . Whether talking about the weather, or about life in general, sometimes "Dreary" says it best. Enjoyed!
