I have always been frugal and had no children, so none of these apply to me. All of my amores agreed with me, making my life much easier than most. The cost of raising children is automatically reducing the size of families in major cities around the world.

Love's Cost

Love is a many splendored thing,

but its cost can go cha-ching!

Innocent love is really so sweet,

but early pregnancy is no treat.

Aborting a baby or marrying wild,

turns a life upside down for a child.

Inhibitions work well until stimulants found,

can turn romance into nightmare come 'round.

Cost of romantic addiction is hard to fathom,

some lives lost altogether in that chasm.

But everything's perfect and the time has come,

we both have income and our time's to be one.

We'll splurge on the ceremony, reception and dance,

fly off on our honeymoon to the south of France.

Children we want plenty to raise as our own,

babysitting, preschool, private school, and a big home.

Financially strapped we argue and fuss,

a costly divorce creates a poor house for us.

Meeting kid's needs through college a boost,

only to find them coming home jobless to roost.

We worked way too long, with romance gone,

those retirement dreams just a poet's song.

Two sick and too weak, we linger, cheek to cheek,

but death stalks and the cost is not for the weak.

Widows left not knowing of her husband's finances.

Widowers left without someone's household graces.

Love touted as the cure to many of our ills,

always seems to ignore who pays the bills.

Yes. The sad and harsh reality of the cost of "love." Your poem brings to my mind lyrics from "Old Man," a song by Neil Young...

"...Love lost, such a cost
Give me things that don't get lost
Like a coin that won't get tossed
Rolling home to you..."

All the best to you, Ron,

Regis (Reg). 🙏😎

I've heard it said that all the problems that arise in relationships begin in one of two places: the checkbook or the bedroom. I would submit that they are intertwined with no real beginning. They just are.

It’s all about our personal priorities…and how we see Love…
You state your case clearly…

For me…”love is a many splendored thing…
…”Love is Nature’s way of giving a reason to be living…” 🎶

Life as it is lived by many in a nutshell. When we live above our means we live a tragic lie. Well penned, Ron.

... And that is why Ron wanted to stay single, and has missed so many opportunities in his life to be romantically involved.

Love doesn't cost anything! When you have love in your heart you have everything you need. I had. My husband had. God provided for us the things we needed, anything more than that is a waste.

Try letting some love into your heart and you will feel fulfilled and your life hasn't been wasted.

We were all born naked with nothing, but when we leave, we leave with the love in our hearts and the clothes on our backs. The love in our hearts was the thing we can take with us when we leave this world.

I am a widow now but I don't lack anything. I am self-sufficient. Thank you, God!

This was great. So much for living off of love. it ain't going to happen. But you have a rare few that somehow put it all together. There is a lot of truth in what you have written.

Loves Cost. Oh my, Ron. what a depressing view of love. Shure it can be costly and, in a word, shitty! But when time is taken by both parties, to attempt to understand the other's point of view and to accept their mates inconsistencies realizing the other has his or her own inconsistencies also. Bonnie and I had been going through one of those 'times', then she became ill and spent a day and night in the hospital and I realized that life without her, as difficult as it sometimes is with her, it is far better to be with her. So I feel this way: I love it when we love each other, and hate it when we do not love each other.

Life is too short not to allow love into it.

My opinion.

Experience proves that monetary costs are incidental in many cases to the mental costs and other life-altering views that involuntarily, as well as voluntarily, get changed. You've covered most of the bases with this easily digestible rhyme fest of reality. Good job.
