chill out, power down and drink up

it is a simpler thing I think
to raise the glass and have a drink
to shut the eyes and not to blink
than to endure the pain

for more the years I put behind me
greater the need that drink should blind me
and smaller the call to just remind me
of days when I was sane

There is a calm surrender brings
And, God, I need a rest from things
and maybe borne on angel's wings
some peace will comfort me.

The world has changed without my leave
For what it was I do not grieve
And what it is I do believe
is harder still to see

Just when it looked as if I might
catch up to it and make it right
it turned and ran afraid to fight
or was it just the drink

Was it just a fantasy
a fleeting dream eluding me
a looked for truth I could not see
that brought me to this brink

I could topple now you know
turn up the glass and simply go
and by the time the cock could crow
I would be heaven bound

I could resist it one more day
but that is how I got this way
and that is why there's hell to pay
and so I'll gulp it down
