Mother's Shawls

Poem Artwork

Spring cleaning the bedroom closet
I come upon a strange  garment bag
Inside two of my moms crocheted shawls
I remove them burying my teary face
In wool which holds her precious scent
How had I missed the bag other times
She has been dead several years

I become engrossed in opaque memories
Unable to see clearly since I didn't want to
I realize I had purposely avoided the bag
Leaving it there meant she would return
Unlike many mother daughter relationships
Ours was good, except for a few years, my fault
The last years before she died were the best

My mother was like a saint, and I loved too much
Trying to emulate her made me the opposite
She never gave up on me, it strengthened my guilt
When I matured  I became more reconciled
Being a mother myself made things clearer
Yet, I had done rotten things without care
Being a cause of great misery to my mother

But her persistence got me over my guilt
I will never forget how forgiving she was
Because my mother practiced what she preached
I was able to forgive myself, and show  reverence
For Creator and all His works not just some things
I could appreciate all of His creation as sacred
I was privileged to have such an exceptional mother

To all mothers,
May you be happy and blessed today and always!

It is great that you kept your mother's things. My sister and my brother tried to get rid of my parents things soon as they're gone. I find that disgusting.

My mother always knew I would keep things for her, that is why she left all the precious things to me.

Sorry your poem just made me think of my siblings, and how unjustly that they did not love my mother the way that they should have.

I'm so glad you have kept things that belong to your mother.

Your Mother would be proud of this tribute, Eileen. I have often stumbled across memories of my Great-Grandmother and those days always bring smiles for the good times we shared and tears for the fact she is gone.

Have a wonderful Mother's Day!!!

Happy mothers day to you too! Do you know how hard it is to find a good shawl these days.......and you have two :-)

We are all young and foolish at some point in our lives. Mom's know this and this is why they can forgive and smile with love.

This is a tender tribute to your Mother and all of our mothers. She loved you so very much that she allowed you wings to test your path and find your way. She was a wise woman to do that and look at you now.

Love and thanks and Happy Mother's Day to you too!
Susan
