'Twas a sultry June day
With no wind nor clouds
To warn of the tumult
To come
When,
As I and my dogs
Snoozed peacefully
Upon the couch
In ignorance,
From out of the south,
Great anvil-heads grew
And darkened the sky
To slate.
We were rudely awakened
By the crash of thunder
Directly overhead,
Sending both dogs
Tight against my sides
Like toddlers
To their mother,
And we sat, trembling,
As the fury of the storm
Broke around
Our mobile home:
The rain
And hail
Driven against the walls
By ferocious winds
That mercilessly whipped the trees
Before them.
For twenty minutes
Lightening flashed over and over,
And thunder continually rolled,
Before nature's tantrum
Began to abate,
And within twenty minutes more
The sun was once again
Shining.
