“Military spouses are the rock on which their families, our military community,
and our national security depend,”
Joe Biden
Another night passes
With leaden time.
In the darkness
Distractions are rare,
There is little to be done
But pace and fret,
And wait,
Struggling valiantly
Not to imagine
The worst
As the endless hours pass
Toward morning.
Only then,
When light brings
The day to life
Do the hour-long minutes
Become mere minutes once more,
When the music of
Their children's laughter
Surrounds her,
And the demands of living
Keep her occupied
And her spirits up.
But as the sun slips away
And the moon again rises
She faces once more
Her deepest fears.
Where is he?
Where have they sent him
This time?
How much danger
Is he in?
He will never say
Because he can't say,
What he does
Cannot be revealed.
So
She never knows
Where he goes
Or when he'll be home,
And the night goes on
Without him.
Indeed, as you say, the hour-long minutes, waiting can be such a trial, as you lay out here beautifully in this poem. The patience is beautiful according to the Islamic traditions and brings its own reward.
