Last Christmas

I’m glad now that there were too many
gaudy decorations on the front yard
for grandkids to help with and enjoy
I’m glad the house was spotless and
scented with cinnamon apple candles
It's good we dragged the ten foot tree in
and wrapped too many lights around it
I’m grateful for a few presents under it
It’s good those strands of lighted bells
made us all feel joy when they played
the old familiar Christmas carols again
Taking time to set up the Nativity Scene
kept us focused on the real celebration
I feel warm satisfaction remembering
I cooked all day, had turkey and ham
with all the trimmings on the big table
where we all sat down to eat and laugh
The fire on the hearth blazed with joy
I’m glad there was no strife or sorrow
for it’s a Christmas I’ll forever cherish
Our whole family together and happy
A special Christmas that I’m thankful for
and I’m glad it was celebrated as it was
because I didn’t know last Christmas
would be the last time we’d all gather
the last one we would celebrate together
So make each Christmas memorable,
Decorate the tree, cook the turkey and
gather the ones you love close to you
for you never know if it will be…..the last
