I was teased growing up. I hated it.

I am home sick with the 'flu and watched a program on "Maury" about people who were teased because of a disability, and this poem came vividly to mind. (I wasn't disabled growing up, like I am now, but was teased for other things.)

My wish for this poem is that it saves one person from being teased.

Poem Artwork

"I JUST WANNA"
~~~~~~~~~~~
I just wanna be like everyone else.
"Normal," if you'd like.
Why can't you just accept me as I am?
Why must you tease me?
~
Do you think I would choose this for myself?
Being different?
Just because I do not look the same way
Or act like you do?
~
Each day my mom tells me, "Have a good day."
I cannot tell her
That I dread going to school each morning
And my stomach hurts.
~
My mom tells me that I'm her "special" child.
I don't like "special."
Being disabled is not being cool.
And I am "uncool."
~
My mom tells me that I am beautiful.
I do not see it.
I look in the mirror and see a monster
And I hate myself.
~
My mom tells me that I am very smart.
If that is the case,
Why do all of the kids call me stupid?
Why do I let them?
~
Why should I have to cry myself to sleep
Every single night?
I sometimes wish that I wouldn't wake up...
That would be so nice.
~
I wouldn't have to hear the ugly names
Or suffer abuse.
I just wanna be like everyone else.
Can't I be NORMAL????
~~~~~~~~~~~

This one touched me because I was teased in grade school, still sometimes by adults. In school I was that little skinny kid, not
I'm curvy. But I'm glad "the big guy" is the judge. Everything he made is "good." Thanks for sharing this touching piece.

I was teased, too, Karla. It hurt deeply then, but as I grew up, entered adulthood, I realized that those of us who were sometimes treated badly ended up, if we were willing to see it, much stronger, much more accepting of ourselves. Eventually, I gained this insight: I'm sooooo glad I'm not like them!

Be well... you're a special light around here, kiddo! katy xox.

Excellent. Like you, I am disabled now, but I was teased a lot in school simply because I was so quiet, and had trouble with math. I don't think normal is an apt discription for people, anyway. We are all different from each other, in some degree. A great write, Karla.

Life creates impairments for us all. Those who tease and condem others for their impairments are usually suffering from mental impairments of their own. I was often teased about my southern drawl when I moved to Ohio as a youngster, memories of how sweet growing up in the south was became a shield against any insults. The main thing in life is to love, and be loved. I feel you're both. I'm sure other Den members agree with my thoughts about you.

When you have her ask, Why can't I just be normal? The first thought that came to mind was, "What's normal?" What's normal for one is not normal for another, so, to really put that thought into motion, it would be determined upon an individual process. Which means, everyone is normal, within their own realm.
Being cruel for some is normal, and being normal is cruel. You've sent my mind into a tailspin Karla...and in this case leaves me with many unanswered thoughts.
You've penned a wonderful and caring piece of poetry, from a 'normally' loving heart.
Merry Christmas!

So sorry that you are feeling especially weak and vulnerable with illness at the moment, Karla, but it certainly brings out the true empathy and beauty of loving compassion in your own soul to share with us here. Such a distressing subject to even talk about - perhaps we only can when our own defences are down, too. This is gut-wrenching and makes me think of how distressing I found scenes in Forest Gump all those years' ago. I guess we have all been there in some shape or form - but not to the degrees that visibly "different" children can feel - and adults. My love and prayers are with you - and them. May they find the grace and acceptance to see themselves as they truly are: in the truth of how God sees them, as his wholly beloved children. We ALL need to see who we are on the inside, and not to weigh ourselves in the light of what we "look" like from outside. Hard lessons here, Karla, God Bless. LOL Kate xx

emphatic poem ... isn't it strange, the children who call ugly names just want to be accepted and feel normal?

Karla, I understand what you feel. My daughter went through torture at the hands of some hateful kids who were never taught how to respect all their classmates...not just the ones who were like they were. I wrote a poem, dedicating it to my daughter called "Normal" which is posted on my page. Children must be taught to have respect and decency for each other. If their parents are intolerant, their children will grow up the same way. My daughter turned her traumas into triumph. She's now a pre-school teacher, not only teaching preschool education, but also emphasizing the teaching of tolerance and respect for classmates. Her class is the most well behaved in the entire preschool center. We couldn't be more proud of her. I know she is very proud of herself, rightly so. Feel better my friend, and I hope you and Karen have a lovely, blessed Christmas! Hugs, Michelle

Sadly, its the nature of the beast. Hopefully, as we mature, we grow out of it. More sadly, others are teased for life I'm a firm believer that what goes around, comes around. Hope you feel better soon. Merry Christmas

Karla, that was emotional. I felt the same way growing up. Teased in school and prayed to be dead. Lots of kids felt this way. I bet that was emotional for you to write. Take care, Rebecca

I think that all kids get teased, but certainly those with handicaps can be easily focused upon. Kids are cruel. Some of the people I have known, who were handicaped as children, have proven to be adults with the most focus and have become extremely successful. This is an excellent write, and brings out a topic that we all should be more sensitive to.
Take care,
Sherry

Hope the bugs visit is over fast! This is a great compassionate write,Karla. However, sadly children being teased is never going to stop. To some it is a right of pasage, and in puberty all is fair game. Whether it be disability , slow thinkers, nerds, people considered ugly, so many things and there are the bully's and those who think because they are blessed wtih good looks and all around things that they are special, and can demean others. On it goes. All we can do is learn to love ourselves be true to who we are, face them down with smiles and act like you haven't a care in the world. It worked for me, and still does;-)...We are only what we allow ourselves to be!
