Poem Artwork

Winter was my season:
of course, it lasted a while,
so one learned to like it.
The cold would nip at my lungs
with frozen bites:
I didn't mind.
The snow crunched underfoot,
whispering secrets only
it trusted me to keep;
knowing what we talked about
would stay between
the snow and I.
The fireplace would wait
patiently, a reward for
shoveling the driveway,
ready to warm my body
after a hard
afternoon's work.
Christmas was magical:
memories of special times
spent with my family.
I believed Santa was real,
although he wore
my daddy's boots.
Winter was my season:
of course, it lasted a while,
so I learned to love it...
and oh, how I miss it now.
In my mind, I
go home a lot.

You've touched on something we all do, Karla. In my mind, I still celebrate holidays with my grandparents on the farm. Even though my grandpa passed away well over 20 years ago. Those memories are always a nice place to visit.

This is just beautiful, Karla, absolutely beautiful. "The snow crunched underfoot, / whispering secrets only / it trusted me to keep;" It does NOT get any better than that.

Hometowns all hold special memories. I moved back to my hometown about eleven years ago and it is here I will stay. I am deep into the mountains where the deer and lions play and the rabbits have built homes around my wood pile. Nice, soothing write, Karla.

My goodness!! So we are... on the same page! But think I'd swap my harrowed Tess for your fireside Kosy Karla with Kocoa and Kristmas any day! Can identify - always the MOST excited about this kind of nostalgia before the actual time sets in... by then, I'm usually looking forward to spring! Evocative and warming, Karla, thank you. Your excellent writing almost convinced me. But, not this Winter. I am happy and warmer in the South, and here I shall stay 'till Spring has sprung... and then some! - Bill
