I guess, be careful with what you write. Your truth may not coincide with my ideas of what it is.
the life he said he lived was not how it happened; well, if not a lie, that's how he remembered it - in his drugged out, drunken state, he wrote a book
i believed to be the truth and nothing but the truth - honest emotion laid bare for those of us who do not know what it is like to live with an addiction
that may or may not be fact - and so, i still don't know what the truth is and what constitutes a lie - all i know it was damn good readin', but was i taken for a ride?
Taken for a ride?? I think not... whether one experiences the experience actually or solely in the realms of imagination, if that then allows the REALITY of the feelings of what that experience might evoke, then the reaction is legitimate and the associated feelings real. I think, as writers, we desire to write so as to enable the reader to "feel the feelings with us", whether we have actually "lived" what we write or not. MOST of what I write is vicariously experienced, come to think of it... unless I am totally out of touch with myself... now I'm confused... See what good writin will do, Karla... it takes you there!! Thanks for the ride - I am enjoyin it!! :)) LOL Kate xx Oh... and looks like I have totally missed the point here, not knowing the actual case in point... but never mind, eh?
this is one hell of a good write; and it speaks volumes. sometimes one wonders if what they read IS truth or fiction; one never may know...well done; take a bow!!

Karla,
I saw all three shows, the one where his Mother was in the audience, the one where he was there promoting the sell of his book, and this last one where he was there slippin and slidin in the crap heap of lies he'd told.
As a reader I didn't feel betrayed at all, because personally I've been where he said he was, and so I didn't buy his book, I lived it, I didn't feel the need to read about his, but what I did feel betrayed over was the fact that he has now betrayed every writer/author out here that's doing their damnedest to make it in the publishing world. He made it and didn't deserve to, and others that deserve to, will never even be looked at.
Oprah told him she felt duped...Well...she was, but not anymore duped than anyone else, hers was just on a more public scale. He's a scam artist, armed with a pen and a publisher and now many bucks to continue his crime.
The only entertainment I have gotten out of all this was watching him sit on that stage next to the Queen of Daytime TV, with that
'deer in the headlight' stare on his rather pale, bluish tinted face, mumbling and stumbling to give her the answers she wanted to hear, and drinking enough water to drown any sorrows he may have had at that particular moment. He appeared to be rather uncomfortable, but then...we all know his appearances can be quite false now don't we?
You've nailed the situation with this Karla, and I believe you deserve many more accolades for what you've written than he ever did.
Will this write of truth make you a million bucks? Probably not. But at the least we all know it's the real truth, and we won't ever have to question it.
Karla, an author makes a deal with the reader. In non-fiction that deal includes that this really happened, in an autobiography the deal is that this really happened to me. This book is a book based on a lie told by a liar who thought of his readers as idiots and saps.
Having said that, his next book will probably be a best seller in this crazy world of our.
I have mixed reservations on this one but I think the over-riding fact that is know was that he was an addict on the road to hell. the book saved him, changed his life and if nothing else perahps that in itself is enough reason to say lets think about forgiveness, the writer wrote a story, it entertained those who wanted to be entertained and now he must deal with his own conscience and his own savior, I say judge not unless you too may someday be judged.
Superb write Karla! If it says fiction you can get away with just about anything. However, non-fiction carries a debt with it for the reader believes it is the truth. Each of us must come to our own decision of what we think of the author. I think he cheated the readers.
My daughter gave me that book for Christmas. I'm halfway through it. I can relate to a lot of it so, to me, it is sure seems real enough (not that I was ever in his "horrific" circumstance). Still, a lot of it rings true. Thank you for sharing this, Karla. Amour et paix à toi. Ton ami de la C-B, Canada,
Régis

Damn straight you were taken for a ride. Don't make excused for the worm. I don't know if you know this, but he tried to market it as FICTION and it was turned down everywhere, so he repackaged it and went for non fiction. Trashy bastard.
