Lightning flashes, whitewashing
my room to pale. All is bleached
bone: the walls, the floor, the bed
- I am the only dark thing, hidden
behind the thundering of my heart.
Please: turn away. It would be
better if you were blind, so you
wouldn't have to see the coward
I've become cringing under the
sheets. Mommy!! Where are you?
I likes, I likes! I love the image of "lightning flashes, whitewashing my room to pale. All is bleached bone...I am the only dark thing..." Very visual!
Ahhhhh, how many times many of us were afraid as a child of the old man up there blowing his mighty horn splitting the sky with lightning. Your poem gives an image of that fear.
Karla we all have a fear, as I would be hiding there wth you holding on for dear life. Thats when I close my eyes and pray for strength.
Thank you for sharing.
Your fear is my fear: we both cringe/tremble at Storm's onslaught. This is when we wish we had mom around, so she could hold us, calm our fears. Living in Texas has only intensified our StormFear. Powerful write of emotional upheaval at the hands of Storm; very well penned/illustrated! BRAVA!
(((HUGS))) and much love, your twin, Karen Lynn. :(
If you see under the bed you will find that there aren't monsters, if you see outside the window at the storm, you will find that the sky people are only playing their silly games.
Mommy could had told you so.
My heart goes out to you here Karla...but you have created the atmosphere admirably. Your Mom would be there holding your hand if it were possible..and would never see you as a coward...just her little girl who needed her support and Love. Hugs, Diana.
Karla - really strong write - do you use candles? They warm the room and their steady flame in a storm can be a comfort, a meditation...hope the storm has passed now, nicky xx
To live in an area where thunderstorms can also mean tornado possibilities, we have good reasons to fear. It's the darned black clouds during the day that make me cringe :o)
You've explained your fears in quite a unique way...great poem!
Storm fears develop in the womb I'm told...interesting to think it could be congenital...I wonder if your momma was at one time in a big storm during her gestation with you and Karen Lynn...it's a point to ponder...love the photo and the ghost-like lightning...I see a life-line in this pic...you'd make a great photographer for those ghost hunters who go into a haunted house and record it on film...no sheets to duck under, Karla...hope it's finally dry there...sleep well...
A Mommy? poem. I know about those. I'm so sorry, Karla. Doesn't matter how long it's been or how old you are, does it? God Bless you, Karla. I'm sorry, Charlie.
The story of Ron Hull, paralyzed in a surgical accident back in the dreaded polio epidemic days, was able to overcome most of the stigma and stereotypes and "pass for normal" for 30 years. As Ron's paralysis increased gradually through the next 20
