Inspired by Sheila Roy's wonderful poem, "Left on the Credenza." Thank you!

Written in five minutes. :)

No woman should be judged solely on her appearance! EVer.

Poem Artwork

... always hated my lips.  There
they were, big as life, twin slabs
of flesh parked under the nose
--- which I also disliked.  These
lips trembled tears to my eyes
(my best feature) when others
would ask if I were part Black --
no White person has lips.  Like.
Those.  Wouldn't have minded;
would have explained their size.

But look at them:  the envy of
every Botox'ed woman desiring
beauty at the swollen point of a
needle:  they're all natural, Baby.

And they're mine.

Still, the words echo from the
past, hurtful comments designed
to bring me down ---

now:  about the fat.  Why did I
have such a pretty face, BUT ---
what was wrong with the rest of
me?  Diet after diet, failure after
failure --- wasn't meant to be a
Barbie.  This body has carried
me, supported me, been there
through good times and bad:  it
ain't going nowhere.  So what
if it's larger --- it belongs to me.

Look at it:  the envy of every
woman who wishes she could
accept herself for the wonderful
woman she is inside --- and out:

and it's mine.  Every bit of it.

Still, the words echo from the
past, hurtful comments designed
to bring me down ---

no.  More.  They're just jealous.

You go girl, that's right, they're just jealous because you're blessed with lushous lips that add depth to your warm smile that compliments your lovely character!

smile and tell the naysayers to eat their heart out -- the true beauty of every person to me is captured in their eyes -- it portends the character of the soul within -- and self perception is not the person others see -- we are always more critical of ourselves than others are -- I see a good looking woman with eyes that project a soul of great wealth -- stay your beautiful self -- God bless -- JMW

There are many fans of full lips out there. It's so hard to accept everything about us or our bodies. Especially when we're still young. Later, it becomes easier and generally happens. Lips is a special write.

I love your attitude. I hated my curly hair in the 60s when straight hair was 'the thing.' Now, I love my hair - even all that white stuff. Isn't it wonderful when we learn to feel good about ourselves, and to heck with what others think.

God bless you. Kathy

Amen, Karla! All through school, kids made fun of my frizzy hair. They were not kind about it. When I grew up, I learned how to manage my curls better and now lots of women give me compliments on them. I'm told I save thousands on perms...lol! My point is, I know how it feels to be made fun of at a young age. It's damaging mentally. As I mentioned before, your comfort level with your current beauty is something we should all strive for. I agree with Karen, too. Health is more important. You are lovely, and I appreciate this poetic dose of honesty! Love and Hugs,
Sheila

When are people going to learn to be grateful and happy to be healthy? When did "beauty only" become such a shallow one hit wonder? Besides what lies underneath the shell is so much more valuable as youth and beauty only last for just a short time. So where do all the shallow people go when they begin to age???? Me, I love you just the way you are, be always proud of yourself....

Be always safe,
Karen

Karla, what an open honest woman you are! And the truth you so directly share visually and in words with not a trace of deception or pretence is admirable. Bravo!

I LOVE this poem. Love of one's self is the single most admirable characteristic a person can possess. Loving who and what we are at any given moment makes God smile. He's smiling now Karla.

Karla, I am so proud of you; you accept yourself for you, and that makes you a much better person than those idiots who can't see past your weight or your imperfections. THEY'RE the ones you have to worry about, NOT yourself. You hold that beautiful head up high and stand proud; many people don't have your gift for words, and many people can't say they've survived what you have! You're here for a reason, and I am awful' glad you are!! Very well penned; brava!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your twinkles, Karen Lynn. :D XOXOXOXOXOXO

Karla, this is so right on!! If you've read my stuff you know that I too have wrestled with feelings of insecurity about my looks, my body, etc...and yet others tell me that I'm ok... I'm beginning FINALLY to realize that maybe I am...because I've always known I was better than fine ON THE INSIDE... this world (society) is so screwy... and we are victims of the magazines and others....yet...I wonder... ?? As for you my dear Karla... you are quite lovely to look at... THIS PICTURE IS VERY LOVELY.... and you are right...your lips are the envy of many...(my mother was French & English) and she had full lips and would cry over them... and I must admit...I was sometimes embarrassed (sadly)...because no one else in our lives had lips like hers...??? and mother was beautiful!! still...I was a kid and society was different back then... anyway... I gained weight too when I was going thru a horrible time in life and people would say..."your face is too pretty for you to be so fat!!!" and I would cry all the time... so... what you wrote here....is like something for many of us to relate with... thank you for being so open and sharing this way....YOU ARE PERFECTLY BEAUTIFUL KARLA...INSIDE AND OUT!!!!! Never let anyone ever tell you differently!!! hugs and love, lindalaw
