Shapeshifting in and out of the shadows, he blends in perfectly. The years spent in combat have prepared him well. Hidden in plain sight: watching. Waiting. I know he's out there. He joins his brothers and sisters in soup lines, scuttling back into the cracks when he is done: a human cockroach that no one wants to see -- or smell. Thank you for your service. Welcome home(less). Strangers in a strange land they once believed in.

Superb; the structure, with broken end-of verse which is continued int the next verse lends a sense of dislocation to the story you tell. This is a most effective use of the poetic form.

Too true, too often, Karla. This is not the same country I grew up in and not even the same one I served just 10 years ago. May God have mercy on America.

A perfect description. Some of them that way for nearly 50 years. Somehow they survive the worst insults nature and the public can throw at them.
