Pioneers of The Plains, © 2013, Karla Dorman I've always said they have to be nuts, those who run out into the wind while we (the 'sane' ones) go the opposite way: we hunker down while they face our fears head-on, racing TOWARDS the storm. They don't go to conquer: they know Who's in charge. Why go then? Why not stay down here with us, where it's safe? No: they go because they believe in the greater good, in the hopes that more lives will be saved: braver than I'll ever be. God bless them, these Pioneers of the Plains.

Bravery will get you nowhere if you are caught by a tornado. Only a very small percentage of people get caught in the path of the tornado because they move quite predictably (for most of the time), are visible, and can be avoided. Far more people are killed by lightning than by tornadoes.
