I fought against a development close to my house and lost which isn't surprizing. I am currently an HS2 cartoonist so I will carry on with my environmental causes and concerns.

Poem Artwork

 The Toads at Tedder Hall

Left in an office on my own
Fighting to preserve my home
Waiting to hand in photos
For the supplementary pack

While huge piles
Of folders
Filled with files
Stacked up high
Catch my eye

And on the wall a brochure rack
'Prepare your property for flooding'
'Your flood warning service'
'Flash flooding is on the increase'
'Flash floods can kill'

Pages and pages on how to cope
With flash floods that offer no hope
Or little or no warning

On one front cover the Coop
Superstore submerged

Next to, a stack Of glossy bookmarks, souvenirs
From this age of global warming
With the floodline number on the back

And on to the giant map on the wall
The new 'Local Plan' for all
Which downgrades land once deemed at risk of flooding
To low risk or not risk at all

And developers that once could not
Now CAN, CAN, CAN build whatever they want - almost -
You get my drift

Building new homes often on raised ground, lifted up
Above other homes all around

But, but, bad luck to existing residents
Whose homes are more likely to flood
( maybe not yet but you bet )

No money in the pot
For District Councillors to object

From central goverment who persist
On building new homes everywhere,

Anywhere, without a care
For the bats, the badgers, the rats,
The hedgehogs, the frogs,
The toads that squat there

As for the newly built flood alleviation scheme -
Which cost £6.5 million to build and surely nothing less
It is the stuff of strange dreams at their best

And as I leave Toad Hall, I mean...
Tedder Hall, with its imposing structure
And grand walls

Past the weeping willows
And the neatly cut, freshly cut grass -
( for nowhere in Louth has such freshly cut grass )

I switch on the radio for news of today
'Evacuate Florida without delay'
A hurricane is on its way

Who knows who, how, when, or where the outward ripples of your words will touch, alter, or change a mind or touch a soul? I suspect we will find out in the afterlife. Some will be surprised, some aghast, but I suspect your words will last and last. Clever writing and heartfelt. Mnay thanks.

Top quality contribution as ever Jane and geed to know you are still fighting the good fight on behalf of our green and pleasant land.
But don't let it get you down, I've been reading the World Economic Forum's agenda Disruption and Renewal In A Post Covide World (aka The Great Reset and it seems none of us will be allowed to own anything by 2050, so at least it will be tgeir own stuff these malicious idiots are destroying.

A problem everywhere. Politicians taking advantage of situations by granting privileges to those with enough money to make it happen. We have to be more environmental friendly or we will surely ruin our lives for ourselves.

Here in Houston, once a very swampy land, we dug the bayous out and then lined the ditches with concrete so that the water would flow faster the Gulf of Mexico. Now that the whole city is concrete with better sewer runoff, all of the water quickly runs to the bayous and creates massive flooding because none of them can handle a heavy rain like they used to.

Instead of having the federal flood insurance give homeowners money to rebuild, I'm in favor of buying their houses at the going rate and not allowing any building on the property closest to the bayous, returning them to their former purpose of alleviating floods and creating diverse ecosystem wildlife.

Reading this reminded me of a quote by Albert Einstein. "The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything." Enjoyed your piece Jane. Poetic voices standing against imbeciles and stupidity resonates. Thank you for sharing. r
