Peaks Of Golden Hope "Part II" (Karena Series)

by Amber "V" Moonstone

12/09/09

The night dragged on,
Karena kept a sharp eye on the pathway,
She would never allow darkness to befall her family,
Only the glimmer of the moon lit their way.

There was a chill to the air as they ascended the mountain,
the children were bundled up tightly,
sleeping as if in their own beds.
Tumas is a good father to their children.

Karena smiled as she looked behind her,
to see Tumas nodding off for a second.
An owl screeched him awake,
as he jumped, Karena let out a huge laugh.

Tumas barely awake says,"Karena, that is not funny"
"OH, Tumas it is, my brave warrior!"
Tumas grumbled and accepted the ribbing.
He is one of Powhatan's bravest warriors.

Karena knew when to step back
when it came to Tumas,
he was filled with tremendous pride,
and he could just take so much fun poking.

She chuckled deeply inside,
and knew that she was the one
that was really the brave one in her family
but also knew her place with respect for her man.

Soon, there would be shelter for the night,
a cave or abandoned dwelling was sure to be seen.
They traveled onward for another hour,
and came upon an abandoned shack.

It looked as though no one had lived there for some time,
Tumas went in and made sure it would be safe.
They settled in for the night,
all bundled up together in their deerskin blankets.

Upon sunrise, Karena was the first to awaken,
She stretched and walked outside.
The ground was blanketed with snow,
and the horses were restless and hungry.

She went to them, and gave them some food,
and calmed their nerves.
Out of the corner of her eye she saw something,
She turned to get a better look.

She froze in her tracks,
In her mind she called for her Eagle Spirit guide,
"I need you Eagle Spirit guide, my family is in danger"
Just as she had her thoughts out into the Universe,

Above her head soared a mighty Eagle,
swooping downward toward the Black bear
that was threatening to attack Karena's family,
The eagle managed to scare it away.

"Thank you Eagle Spirit, again you have saved my family
I shall forever be in your debt."
The eagle swooped just above her head
and dropped what looked like a piece of bark.

She went over and picked up the object,
it was indeed a piece of leather
with a map drawn on it.
It had all kinds of symbols and words.

She tucked it inside her medicine pouch
and kept it for safe keeping till another time.
She began gathering some tree limbs and dried them
to build a fire for morning meal.

As the children awoke, they could smell
their food cooking.
The family ate a hearty meal
and then began their journey once more.

Days went by as they traveled upward toward
the mountain peak, where Karena was guided.
Upon the eighth day of travel Karena felt a vibration
that told her to stop and make a home with her family.

There they lived all winter,
and when spring arrived,
they heard the news that a powerful white man
was to arrive from the mother land of England.

It was time for Tumas to rejoin his people,
He was called to fulfill his warrior duty.
The news of the impending arrival of Sir Thomas Dale
was a threat to the Powhatan Nation.

Thomas Dale was a very powerful white man,
The Powhatan people needed to protect their
land from him, otherwise they would be doomed,
Tumas could not let this happen.

There was no time to hide,
action was needed
to drive Dale and all the other white men
sailing back toward England.

War was in the air,
Tumas must lead the way,
toward victory and resurrection
of their sacred land.

Karena, Eagle Medicine Woman

The saga continues, like a forgotten piece of Native history retold so they wouldn't forget it again and commit the same ghastly errors.

Cliffhangar. Will Tumas come back? This second part of Peaks of Golden Hope soars with a powerful gift of Eagle...an omen, one of survival...symbols are valuable props needed in this series, Amber, and you always are putting into place, the elements of these Native symbols to further your story...it keeps it interesting and also a valuable lesson in what these symbols and words do to propel your story to another level...looking forward to the next part...be well.

Sage

You have the spiritual essence of the indian days when people lived with the land and creatures. It was a time when respect for our world was cherished. Nobody seems to care much anymore. I'm grateful for your insight into the days you write about.
God bless you this Christmas.
Blessings and love,
Susan

Excellent piece the way this flows. Great for middle school aged readers who find history a challenge. This poem, sculpted around a history tale/adventure would keep kids on the edge of their seats...not to mention appreciating stories of the past.
