THE BED

IF YOU LOVE SOMEONE DON'T WAIT
UNTIL THEY ARE GONE TO SHOW IT

“it's a real classic,” he said
as he ran his fingers lightly over the
filigreed brass headboard
“the kind of bed that arouses
a man’s erotic fantasies….
how much do you want for it?”

“two hundred” i answered
knowing it was worth much more
but feeling somehow relieved
that it would be bought and enjoyed
by a man who appreciated its
true quality and worth

“it’s a bargain,” he said
smiling as he made out the check
i pulled off the coverlet and sheets
the faint scent of your perfume
drifted up and i noticed that he
breathed deeply to inhale it’s bouquet

i helped him dismantle the bed and
carry it to his truck, part by part
i watched him drive away
with a precious piece of our life
then i slowly closed the door
turned the page to a new chapter

my tears fell, my body racked with sobs
i had to let that bed go
but the memories linger on and on
the nights of love, the lazy rainy days
hours you labored and i labored over you
the vision of our daughter in your arms

oh how i wished for one more day
one more night with you
one more time to touch you, kiss you
to sail ecstasy’s sea together
one more time to tell you, show you
how much you meant to me

even when another has shared my bed
you were still there between us
there is no room for two women in my bed
so i must buy a new bed, a classic
one that arouses a man’s erotic fantasies
and enfolds two lovers in warm opulence

there will be a new ornate brass bed
to welcome the beauty of new love
the new fragrance of someone i adore
a bed not steeped in memories
or the cold sadness of losing you
a new bed to make new memories in
