MY FRIEND GOT MARRIED

my friend got married last weekend
bringing to bear on me the fact
that i no longer am....married
except to memories of her
and the scent of her perfume
that i sometimes think i can smell
in my dark bedroom at midnight

she is beautiful, my friend’s bride
with long dark hair and eyes
as black as a daisy’s center
not at all like my fair skinned bride
with her auburn hair and jade eyes
but now i have no bride, only a memory
an oversized bed i can’t seem to fill
even with a never ending stream
of starry eyes and warm curves

my friend got married, and joy
animates his features now
like an enchanted disney movie
where the prince finds the princess
and they live happily every after
only no one lives ever after
we are all mortal, and even fairy tales
must end, in the end, often so quickly
there’s no time for a goodbye kiss

maybe watching my friend get married
will inspire a reality that life truly goes on
and love once it has been tasted and lost
is never completely unattainable again
my friend is happy now, i hope
he will be happy for many years to come
and that he never wakes up at midnight
inhaling the perfume of a memory

So beautifully written, this bought tears to my eyes. You're happy for your friend, but all of the anguish in your life comes rushing back. How sad.
