Gravely ill is the priest; bells start to toll,

Death stands at his door, his spirit to tease,

With siren voices his soul to cajole…

…Oh Father of Mercy, save his soul please!

Rushed to hospital, there’s no time to waste,

Surgery may save him from agonies,

Surgeon must act with great skill and with haste…

…Oh Father of Mercy, save his soul please!

Skilful is the surgeon, triumph at hand,

Success will crown all his activities,

The priest’s life will not reach the bitter end…

…Oh Father of Mercy, save his soul please!

Back in the ward he is taken, asleep,

But life is so full of rich ironies,

Across the street huge red flames of fires leap…

…Oh Father of Mercy, save his soul please!

Seeing the fires raging across the street

The surgeon - fearing some new tragedies -

Rushes to the priest’s bed, death to defeat…

…Oh Father of Mercy, save his soul please!

He draws the curtain, priest’s fears to combat,

Feeling compassionate, truly tactful,

He doesn’t want him to wake and think that

The operation was unsuccessful.

Dear Peter,

Coming from you, I kind of expected this twist. However, I then thought this time it is a serious poem. And then to realize that you did catch me.

What an artist!

My father had a two percent chane of living after a heart attack and brain clot, I called the priest before my family, all he remembers is seeing a cross. 10 yrs on he is a healthy 80 year young man. But boy was I in tears.
