It is now As it was then In the beginning Of our love – Or what we believed Then to be love You retreat To fantasy Some escape From your "awful reality" Which includes me Unsatisfactory Alone I Pray your safe return Knowing now I cannot save you From Tempter’s snare Fiery furnace Understanding Your pain is your pain And this dalliance Is far less about me Than about what lies Deep within your own heart I do not spill Endless tears anymore But cry quickly For myself Especially for our son Then I stand alone Alone I Pray your safe return Knowing now I cannot save you From Tempter’s snare Fiery furnace Alone I Pray your safe return Knowing now… Alone I Pray your safe return… Alone I… Alone

Beautiful.
I love this poem. It so accurately depicts the emotion and eventual resignation involved in such a situation.

Such fervent hope even in the face of fear, your faith
is strong Dawn! Many people are alone even with someone
which I find even worse! Excellent heartfelt write!

when we accept that we are alone is when we can move on ... when hope is hopeless it is only our inner strength that keeps us vital and focused ...

You have learned and share an important truth--the one who cheats can't blame it on the wronged party. However, the wronged lover still suffers immensely. Prayer is sometimes the only recourse. WEll-penned work.

the verse that reached deep and gave my soul a twist was

"...you retreat
