There is a stranger
staring back
from your bathroom mirror
waiting
to be acknowledged
received
be loved
starving
for your undivided attention
a stare
a look
and if only
for you to say
with a smile as added bonus,
"Hello there, beautiful stranger"
(Have you really seen yourself, looked into your eyes and seen you? Make it a habit, go on a quest to love yourself, wherever you see your reflection, say, whisper or think "Hey there beautiful stranger" Try it!)
I try to hide from mirrors and pictures... :~)
Always wishing that others could see more of what is inside than outside... but then, I don't think that they would necessarily like that anymore than the outside, so maybe I should just be happy with what is...
Being comfortable with oneself is an important thing, but oh, so difficult!

Aye, this rings so true on many levels, Bernice. I wonder if it is because I am a humorist I find it difficult to take self-esteem seriously? Yet it would do me so much good, I think. I am a slow learner at life, but your encouragement heartens and eggs me on in ways that I can receive the message. Thank you for this, from one who always thinks of herself as "strange"! :)) Love, Kate xx
Gosh I had this written and somehow i lost it before i could post it!!! I just don't like looking at myself in the mirror, yet when I do I see something different than photos of myself...which are really bad. Of course they say that photos don't lie...so my oh my, I am ugly!!! I know part is because I put on weight which i am in the process of working to get it off. But what makes it worse is my teeth are so bad, I am embarrassed to smile. I just can't afford to get my teeth fixed.
Like Michael Guy, I feel better inside that how i look.
Good poem, but I often say to myself I'd like to run the experiment of a "house without mirrors". That way I would always see myself in my mind the way I was in my thirties (my best age period) I often FEEL inside better than I actually look! (still doing OK for fifties!)
You certainly bring up the poetic wonderings in your poems....

Great message we all can learn from, if only we could love ourselves as God does. Might change our whole outlook on things, ya know?? Very well penned; brava!

Very uplifting and sound advice for everyone to follow as it all begins with the love and respect one has for themselves before they can shed their light on others....
I like this because I have to look in the mirror daily and tell myself I am going to have a good day. I really think it works 80% of the time. I agree with the others... Great wisdom.
I enjoyed this write Bernice and you are so right, we often try to compliment and be nice to all we meet in our day to day lifes but all too often forget to take time out to compliment or pat ourselves on the back. This is the first time I have read your work but look forward to reading lots more.

Not an easy thing to do you ask of us Bernice. I didn't look in a mirror for years and now finally graduated to looking at pictures, but a mirror? aaaggghhh! You drive a hard bargain, but you are right. Thanks for sharing, Deborah
