on a topographical map, my view from a canyon wrinkle between the coast and the desert rarely allows the atmospheric condition of lightening. it is as rare as snow

was it you
that made it rain?

a unique phenomenon
at 3 am

I’d been watching the sky
flashing light in the north
sometime after sunset
I thought at first it was
Hollywood filming
beyond the local hills
and I dragged my daughter
outside to see it
she shrugged her shoulders
“not sure”, “maybe
an arcing transformer”

the sky flashed again

awakened then at 3 am by a rumble and roar
I leaned towards the window
a brilliant flash of light
and instant thunder rolled
I got up to see
stepped out the back door
and was greeted by
a bolt of forked lightening
flash and crash went the sky
rhythmic in progression
and I giggled and squealed
at this unusual sight

just then the first drops
of rain were gently released
stirring the dirt with the
fresh scent of moisture
I reached out my arms
touching the drops
the  liquid cool
and delightful
I twirled around
face to the sky

wondering if this was how
the nomadic tribes felt
as the medicine man
danced for rain
and then celebrated
the magic
running water
dripped down my arms
my hands extended to the sky
to some such a common thing
to me a moment of rite and ritual

was it you
that made it rain?

outstanding poem, Debby ... some people do have an influence on the weather ... the rain can also symbolize the flow of consciousness permeating this poem ...

There is strength in the forces of nature that have a way of humbling us and making us question how is this possible. Good write,

I live in the midwest where storms are the norm and i am still awed by lightening and thunder, so much power unleashed. i remember the years i lived on the west coast, we seldom saw real storms...i missed them at the time

Start trying to answer those pertinent questions and you might put the Weather Channel out of business. Hey! That wouldn't be such a bad idea. Reminds me of an old line by some forgotten essayist: "How long would they talk about the weather if we gave 'em a chance?" Now we know. Twenty-four/seven. Nice poem, don't mind my rambling.
