Both the poem and the legend are totally fictional and are created and written only by myself. Any similarity to the name of a place called Lakeside Township, I sincerely extend my apology in advance.
There is a full moon up in the sky tonight. Its silvery reflection floats calmly over the lake. It is almost as white and as pure as the feather I have seen on your beautiful body. My love, I wish I could feel you in my arms once again. It seems eons have passed since I last saw you.
Some people say you are a ghost now, a kind spirit. Yet, to me, you are as real and as beautiful as a true woman. Whenever we would meet we would talk, we would laugh, and I would hold you in my arms and kiss you, feeling your tender flesh and the soft feather on your body. And I would see my reflections into your dark eyes.
I'm missing you so much, my sweet love! I wish you would come back to me. And this time, I will give you all the love and care that you deserve. Never will I, once again, so foolishly attempt to lift that mask off your face again, not until we are both ready in our hearts, minds, bodies, and souls.
I am sorry! I was selfish and careless and had acted too quickly on an impulse. I had promised you never to take off your mask until both of us are ready and are truly in love with each other. Yet, out of my curiosity and without any warning, I lifted the mask off your face! I have caused you horrific pain! I selfishly had broken my promise.
I went home that night in shame; feeling all the pain that I have caused you. You told me a bad witch had cast a spell on you, changed you into a half-swan-half-human creature; and the spell can only be removed by a true lover, one who would genuinely love you. When I removed your mask I could see the fear in your eyes, and the disappointment you felt in your heart!
You had not changed back into your human form. You suddenly realized that my love for you was not true , and I have broken your heart! You had placed your trust in me, and I had so carelessly thrown that trust away. I can only imagine all the pain that I had caused you physically and mentally.
Pieces of your broken heart had fallen to the ground, and all I could do was to helplessly stand there watching them fall. There was nothing I could do to save those severed pieces. I have never forgiven myself for hurting you. I’ve made a promise to myself since then, to make it up to you. My love for you is true now. It is solely belonging to you.
My sweet love, I am now surrendering to you my body, my heart, and my soul. Please come back to me, my dear love! And this time we will be together forever! I will not leave this place, ever, until I've found you and hold you in my arms once again.

LEGEND OF THE SWAN WOMAN:
Residents of the Lakeside Township said that the Swan Woman had died on the night when the mask was prematurely removed; and for many years after that her ghostly spirit was seen floating along the lake, haunting the Lakeside area.
To set her spirit at ease, a foundation was set up by the Lakeside residents to build her a swan statue, showing her true beauty within the swan as well.
Years later, it was also said that her lover who was grief-stricken by immense guilt, had committed suicide by jumping into the lake.
For many years after her lover's death, the Lakeside residents were haunted by yet another ghostly spirit who would wander around the Lakeside area. They would hear the sound of a sad soul, crying and mourning the loss of his love, and it could be heard for miles. The spirit would haunt the area, seemingly always waiting, and searching, hoping to be reunited with the love of his life, the Swan Woman, to seek her forgiveness.
On one fateful night of a full moon, the crying and mourning came to an abrupt end; and instead, the sounds of laughter and the joyful rendezvous of two spirits were heard by the residents. One would only assume that the two lovers had finally found each other, and the two souls were reunited.
From then on, whenever there is a full moon in the night sky, the Lakeside residents would light candles and say prayers to celebrate the joyful reunion of the two loving souls, and wish them happiness ever after.
I think you should write plays. You would make a great play writer Sandie. I always love delving into your love stories, Hope you have a great day, hugs.

I remember this poem when you posted it in Facebook. I liked it then, and I liked it now. I like myths and legends, even the fictional ones.
"And I would see my reflections edged into your dark eyes." What an artful sentence. "When I removed your mask I could see
the fear in your eyes,
and the disappointment you felt in your heart." This is so vividly told that it makes me ache. I like how you broke this into segments, and that you told the first segment in first person, which made it so personal. I feel your ability to place dark and light next to each other and then nestle them into the yin/yang circle. You do this with storytelling skill that draws us into your words as though they are music. ~~ Diana
My partner and I own a property (temporarily, the business owner is buying it back from us) in the Lakeside subdivision. There really is no lake, only a pond at the Lakeside Country Club. I believe there are swans at the Swan of your story is probably there from the haunting beauty of the place.
This is wonderful Sandie...as a child I would devour any stories like this, and any myths and legends I could find...writer Joseph Campbell stresses the importance of this area of story telling in all cultures...you have told this story with such grace and emotion...
I loved it...utterly charming, and a happy ending too...wonderful!
