Where you share a beach with the man in red and white!

Poem Artwork

I woke because I heard a sound -
and there beside my bed,
Was Santa Claus, with sack in hand,
and coat of white and red;
I asked old Father Christmas,
even though I’d just turned three:
“Will you consider holidaying
somewhere nice, with me?”
He said: “I’m rather busy Boo –
but maybe in a week;
If you leave me your number
I will call you and we’ll speak!”

“Oh, not NEXT week!” I pleaded,
“Cos my Mummy and my Dad
are taking me to Borneo -
or is it Trinidad?
Can you please make it later,
once we’ve come back home again?
I really want to holiday
with you – but please, not then!”

But at the bottom of my bed
the moonlight brightly shone;
And though he’d left some parcels,
dear old Santa Claus had gone!

I wondered if it was a dream –
had I just seen him so?
Did Santa say, on HOLIDAY
with ME, he wished to go?

The first thing in the morning
as we gathered round the tree;
I told my Mum and Daddy
what the previous night I see;
“I think you mean you SAW him!”
said my disbelieving Dad:
“And anyway, you silly bear -
we’re off to Trinidad!”

And one week after Christmas,
which, of course, was lots of fun;
We flew off in an aeroplane
to laze beneath the sun.
And though I built some castles
with the sand upon the beach;

I wondered if hot Trinidad
was out of Santa’s reach?
He hadn’t called me on the phone
as he had said he would;
And Daddy said he never will
because I’d not been good;
And with a twinkle in his eye
Dad told me not to mope,
For Father Christmas couldn’t come
unless he left his coat!
“It’s far too hot in Trinidad
for bearded men in furs;
And reindeer couldn’t stay out here
until some snow occurs!”
And then he leapt into the pool
and went off for a swim;
And I was left in misery
and wondering after him.

Had Santa really let me down
that night on Christmas Eve;
When by my bed, he smiled and said…
Oh! Who should I believe?

For seven days we holidayed –
my Mummy, Dad and me;
But not one sign of Santa
or his reindeer did I see;
And Daddy said he wouldn’t come:
that I had made an error;
“Old Santa wouldn’t speak to you –
you’re far too much a terror!”
And I became unhappy,
I was disappointed - sad;
And all because old Santa
didn’t come to Trinidad;

And as we packed our cases
and my Daddy called the bus;
I heard my Mummy laughing
and creating such a fuss!
For parked outside the hotel,
at the ready, so to speak;
Was Santa and his reindeer -
said he’d waited there all week!
“Now don’t delay – hop on my sleigh,
or we will miss your flight!”
And on we got, though we forgot
my Daddy – SERVES HIM RIGHT!
