Fried Chicken
The teacher said, name your favorite animal of the day,
Bobby said , it’s my dog he always likes to play,
Jeanie said , my horse. Just riding her is fine.
Jimmie said Fried Chicken , it’s the favorite of mine,
Don’t be a smart alack Jimmie , my question’s not for jokes,
But Ma’am he said, Fried chicken is the favorite of lots of folks,
Little boy , I’ve had it, to the principal you go,
Third grade is here for learning, not a comic show,
Principal said it’s funny but Jimmie don’t repeat it,
Fried chicken is my favorite , I really love to eat it,
Next day the teacher ask for the favorite animal that you own,
My dog again, said Bobbie, he never runs off alone,
My little cat, said Jeanie, she plays with me at lunch,
Jimmie said , my chickens, there’s twenty in my bunch.
Teacher said , why chickens , keeping them’s a dirty task,
Well they make Fried Chicken, but I hoped you wouldn’t ask,
Jimmie your Fried Chicken , I think it’s a ,lotta bull,
No ma’am, it’s the truth, we’ve got a freezer full,
Teach said , that’s enough, you again have ruined my day,
Jimmie said, To the principal’s office ? Yes ma’am , I know the way,
Principal said, it’s funny , but I think it might be best,
To Lay off the Fried Chicken and give your teacher a rest,
Next day it was history, The teacher smiled and said,
Our past is filled with hero’s but all of them are dead,
Take the chalk and write the name of your favorite hero from the past,
Don’t look discouraged Jimmie, I’ll let you go till last ,
There are presidents and inventors famous people there are many,
I’m sure that you must have a favorite or can’t you think of any,
You cain’t use fried chicken in order to get scored,
Jimmie proud and smiling wrote Colonel Sanders on the board!
There’s an opening for a third grade Teacher

With dad's check from the trucking company, I would buy groceries on Friday afternoon and often fry up fresh hamburger and made homemade, crinkle cut French fries for us, since we didn't have a McDonald's in our town. And then, most Sundays, before going to church, she would bread chicken parts with flour and fry them up quickly to get them brown.
She knew the Colonel Sanders trick and put them in the oven on a low heat while we went to church. When we got home, that chicken literally fell off the bone, yet had crispy skin that was scrumptious to eat. We did not have a Kentucky Fried Chicken either. And mom made the best chicken gravy that I ever ate. The Colonel's artificially tasting, too salty gravy doesn't compare.
