I love the pigment of my skin and the boldness it represents

I stand tall knowing that the blood that runs through my veins
Is descendant from an immeasurable amount of strength
My existence has been paved with the blood, bones, sweat, and tears
Of all those who despite the captivity that surrounded them still persevered
Using the love from one another to climb through the pit of hate that condemned them to hell
With the faith that one day their children and every generation that followed
Could live proudly and freely in their skin without intolerance
The most important thing that they have passed down to us
Is the hope, faith, and fight that still emanates from every day of our life
See we hold the strength to smile in adversity and laugh through the pain
We hold strong to our culture that the world tries to shame
And at the same time they imitate it and try to give it another name
But they could never duplicate the purity of our heritage that flows from within
That’s why I’m so proud of the pigment of my skin
It holds a spirit so tenacious it can’t be killed
A mind so clever it can’t be stilled
A passion so deep it can’t be concealed
So every day I look at the pigment of my skin
And every time I see the pigment of my kin
I see the kings and queens we impinge
If we truly united imagine what we could all build
That’s why they tell lies about us and pervert what’s real
They’re afraid of us
Because despite everything devised to destroy us
WE’RE STILL HERE!
Oh how I love the pigment of my skin

Powerful writing. And you have every right to speak out against ignorance and bigotry that has no place in a world that is rapidly growing aware of itself, rather than wallowing in ignorance and cruelty.
