I couldn't believe what my eyes were seeing!

My Own Car Sped Past Us

My husband and I had a meeting, it happened to be downtown.
My son had a baseball game; I could picture his edgy frown.
Our meeting ran late but thought we could make his game.
My husband drove like a maniac and driving me insane.

As we were zooming past the field, our other car sped by.
Going in the opposite direction and I heard my husband sigh.
My daughter at the wheel driving her brother to his game.
She was only twelve, no question now, I was sure I went insane.

We knew at once, it wasn’t her first time, as we watched her go.
She had her elbow out the window and was driving like a pro.
My husband quickly made a U turn, barely missed a car.
If I were a drinkin woman, I’d have looked for the nearest bar.

He drove up behind them; we knew they saw us there.
For my son turned around and folded his hands in prayer.
Following them to the field was frightening, a real nightmare.
She parked the car so diligently like she didn’t have a care.

She walked over to us, our son stood apprehensively behind,
I heard my husband expletives’, asking if she lost her mind.
I was in a daze I think, not believing what I’d seen.
I thought I’d wakeup any minute, in someone else’s dream.

But there she stood in front of me, saying how sorry they both were.
“He was gonna miss his game,” were the few words out of her.
My husband yelled, “You’re grounded for the rest of the year”.
She didn’t say a single word, didn’t shed one solitary tear.

Both knew they were in trouble, they couldn’t believe they’re luck.
My little son took the blame, and said he should have ducked.
As if we wouldn’t have recognized our own car driving past.
It may not have been her first time driving:
But it definitely would be her last.
