Mom taught me to sew
When I was a little girl
They didn’t have Ritalin back then
So I learned to focus, sewing
Pretty flowers and birds
On pillowcases and dresser scarves
As if anyone has heard of dresser scarves
These days, but I learned
To blend those pretty colors, to express
All the energy inside me
Into the designs I was sewing, leaving
A bit of myself in every thing I made
Along came the sixties, colorful and free
And instead of pillow cases, I sewed
Peace signs and butterflies
On my boyfriends jeans, my denim jacket
Any surface that would hold the thread
I created my own colorful world
In Hollywood, before I was corrupted
By ‘easier’ (fool) ways of earning money
I sewed clothes for entertainers, sequined
Rhinestones and thread combining
To make clothes that would flash and shimmer
Under the stage lights
Now 30 or more years later
They call it retro, and my designs are in again
Flashy, colorful, still shimmering under the lights
But these days they can’t be bought
I make them for friends, for my children
For my four year old Brittney Speers wannabe granddaughter
For someone I pass on the street who is so enthralled
That I know they will cherish the work I put in it
Its something special and its something mine
Something that will be here, long after I’m gone
And all because my mom took the time
To teach me to sew, when I was a little girl
In this world, it may not be looked on as important any longer, but it is. I commend your mother and you.

Your Mom had to be a great Lady. Teaching you something that may have seemed so small at at that time Sue, but became a good part of your life. May late sister-in-law was half owner of a company in downtown LA that did the bead work for the celebrities. She had Liberace as a client, Elvis, etc. many big names. She was an experts's expert at doing the beading. She did Nancy Reagasn's dress for the inaguaral ball (not sure which one). The Reagans sent her an autographed picture of the ball gown. Well I guess I better stop boring you. Bill
