When all is said and done
And you draw your last breath
You surrender your soul
Into the arms of death
What will you leave behind
Who will remember you
Looking back at your life
How well did you do
When all is said and done
When you travel your last mile
Looking back on your life
Did you bring others a smile
Did you visit a sick friend
Or put it off another day
Did you stop and smell the flowers
Or hurried by them on your way
When all is said and done
What will others think of you
When the eulogy has been read
And your life on earth is through
Will you leave your mark on the world
Through a child's happy face
Or did you live your life in sorrow
That time cannot erase
When all is said and done
And dusk falls on your soul
You see your life pass by
Each and every scene unfold
Will you see the happiness you brought
To someone in need
Or will you see a tearstained face
Wallowing in their own greed
When all is said and done
And your body cries for rest
Will your family grieve around you
Knowing you have done your best
When the angels come to claim you
Will you be worthy of their call
Or will you hang your head in shame
As your teardrops fall
Oh Linda, how did I miss this gem? This is wonderful -- so full of inspiration and wonderous things to think about on our journey through life. If you don't mind, I'm going to print this out and keep it here above my computer -- I do want to make a difference! I thoroughly enjoyed this poem, my friend. You did a beautiful job writing it.
Love,
CJ
Inspirational and thought-inciting verses, Linda. Thank you for sharing this offering. Love and peace to you,

Something we all have to face; but will we like the answer. I believe WE SHOULD never compromise our beliefs... too many Compromise, too many chameleons in this world. In the end we may get Quite a surprise if we don't stay on the straight and narrow, not to mention doing ALL THINGS GOOD!
When All Is Said and Done is a powerful, thought-provoking message, Linda. You've brought it up and placed it squarely at our feet, not unlike the reproving mother to her upstart youngster: "Well, what have you got to say for yourself?" And how we answer may well predict our eternal future.
For "When all is said and done" is only a checkpoint. Our life on earth is only part of the journey, for after our passing there will be more to say and do. Do we really believe that God put us here for a few years and then intends to retire us? No, I think of life more akin to trying out for the basketball or baseball team or auditioning for the school musical. It's not an end unto itself but the beginning, sort of a "spring training" as it were.
And like a great coach, Linda, you're asking the question of what do we think of ourselves. Do we have merit? Have we taken advantage of the opportunity to learn and to grow and to be of service to others?
Your last line is dynamite: "When the angels come to claim you, will you be worthy of their call or will you hang your head in shame as your teardrops fall?"
I'm so glad you reposted this poem, Linda. I might have missed it, otherwise. That would have been a shame 'cause this is great stuff!

When all is said and done I'm sure some will remember me as complicated, compassionate, and passionate but as long as they hold an opinion then I've had an impact. Excellent write my friend.

WOW Linda! Without a doubt one of the best poems I've read. Stunning and humbling. Bravo!

Linda you captured completely the purpose of life as it should be. All to often we neglect to take stock in what we have done with our lifes and who we have become. It is not the wealth or the other material aspects that we will be remembered for but for out capacity to love. This is a keeper.
