Of the dark cloud overhead
I Love You's would be more abundant
Nothing left unsaid

When I left for school that day
That evil waited in the halls
I would have kneeled to pray

Had the gift to foresee
That death was walking by my side
Its whisper meant for me

I would left nothing undone
So many lives torn apart
By a madman with a gun

So many tears would be shed
Families hearts bleeding
For their children who are dead
If I had only known
Stopped the insanity
Before the blanket of death
Reached down to cover me

Your poem says everything that my tribute to the tragedy did not. This is absolutely beautiful and a fitting memorial to the innocent souls and their families, now left to mourn their loss.
A heartfelt and compassionate tribute.
I believe it is high time to change gun laws in VA
It is destroying so many innocent lives

Written with passion, consideration, and feeling, from a very caring person.
Linda I read this last night at the poetsnest...brought tears to my eyes...I tried to post there but for some reason my computer kept giving me an error...so I am so glad to see it here at the den today! We have all said it time and time again, if I had've known...I would've done...this serves as a powerful reminder that we should live everyday as if it could be our last, for none of us know when we may meet death! The main thing is to keep our hearts pure and ready to meet our Lord! Such a powerful write! Have a great Sunday!

A very sad but eloquent poem, Linda. Who can know what lies ahead each day? We are only a heartbeat away from eternity.
Two lines especially struck me from the first verse -- "I love you's would be more abundant" and "I would have kneeled to pray."
If we meet every day with these 2 things in mind, it would make a world of difference in our lives.

The words are beautiful and they mean a lot to those of us in Virginia and know the Hokie Nation for what it is.

If I had only known is an outstanding poem. Prevention is the best treatment. If only this madman's mental illness were treated early enough this tragedy would never happen. But it wasn't meant to be.
