All we see are stars and stripes
But it represents so much more....
If our American flag could speak
Is this what it would say....

A dark and humid morning
A soldier kneels and prays
He dreams of family and home
As he counts the days
He don't hear the gunfire
As the bullet finds its place
He's left hurt and bleeding
Disbelief etched on his face
With pride I stand and wave
Amist war and crimson stains
You can raise me to the skies
But you can't touch my pain

******************************

I'm the red white and blue
But there is so much more to see
Blood, tears and a soldiers screams
Are sown inside of me
With every stitch of the needle
Another prayer is said
As the war rages on and on
Another soldier is dead
I wave with pride and glory
As the world goes insane
You can raise me to the skies
But you can't touch my pain

*******************************

A soldier's mother weeps in anquish
Clutching a picture of her son
Nothing can ever bring him back
When all is said and done
I hear the cries of the forgotten
Tears America can't see
A soldier holding his dying friend
No bitter taste of victory
A child weeps over her fathers grave
Standing in the pouring rain
You can raise me to the skies
But you can't touch my pain...

A heart-wrenching account of our young people who sacrifice their lives under a flag, and the sad thing is that the pain isn't any different for the mothers of other flags. The war machine is the most corrupt and despicable business in the world. More money is spent every day on arms and weapons than any other commodity, even oil! Now thats perverse!
Beautifully said Linda,
Best regards,
David

Linda my dearest companion and friend, you hit where it hurts and the recollection of War makes me cry! You sound like a soldier that has been on the battlefield! This is magnificent because it makes me regress and feel the pain of Vietnam! I am OK, but the world needs to read this and try to find reason to avoid conflicts and War! Peace!!!

Linda,
Once again a very heartfelt poem that reflects your unusual sensitivity to the futility of war. I served our country during the Vietnam era and although in uniform, I wasn't called to battle. I dreaded the thought of it and spent many nights wondering how I would cope with the stress of being called up. To me, war is abhorrent and my hope is that one day, the world's disputes can be resolved by peaceful means rather than the taking up of arms. I consider myself a patriot, but I don't see the justice served in taking or giving up a life to prove it. Would't it be wonderful if we could all just get along?
