I used to work in a nursing home and have seen the devastation that Alzheimers leaves on a family. I've tried to place myself in this person's shoes for a little while and feel what she/he feels...

Poem Artwork

The nurses bustle by
They don't see my face
I'm in my own little world
A special private place
So much I can't remember
When my daughter comes to call
She seems to talk in circles
I don't understand at all

She don't know why
I have such a blank stare
Half the time I'm not aware
That she's even there
I can't seem to function
The nurses take good care of me
But I feel I'm in a prison
And have thrown away the key

A sea of endless faces
They hug me and smile
I fight to remember
I guess I'm just senile
If I could unlock the door
That controls my crippled mind
If only I could remember
All these years I've left behind

I did housekeeping on an Alzheimer's unit, Linda, so this brings back a lot of memories. A sensitive and realistic write.

I have often wondered, when I see or hear of someone trapped in this "PRISON", just how they see life! I believe you have given us a perfect insight into their world. God bless you for this. Just Jim.

this poem demonstrates one of the strengths of this craft...to stand us in another's shoes, to UNDERSTAND. You have succeeded wonderfully with your writing PRISON, Linda. Thank you and may God bless.

You reminded me of my grandmother, a very well-read woman, trapped in a smile her last few years--took me back.

A very thoughtful, compassionate write, such a horrible disease. Had a glimpse into what it might be like when I was on some medication last year, made me think. I couldn't remember how to use a spoon therefore couldn't eat, I wondered if that could be the case sometimes when people with alzheimers or dementia leave their dinner? Anyway, very well written. God bless. Baz

We have lost two family members to Alzheimeres and have seen first hand the cruelty of a mind that cannot remember. This is an understanding and sympathetic poem that is lovingly penned.

I think you captured well the sad reality of Ahzheimers and dementia, it is one of natures cruelst tricks to allow someone to love and make so many special memories only to lose them all as we get older.

I just hope I have a good warning that I'm going to come down with this horrible disease. 'Nuff said.

Hi Linda, This piece has a special meaning to me. You see my Mother died in 1991 from it. Doctors said it was heart failure but I think Alzheimers had a lot to do with it. This was an excellent body of work my friend. As always your poetry is Great.
