Where were you?

Poem Artwork

Cry of the Wounded Heart

God where were You when I needed you?

Why didn’t you come when I called?

Oh God where were You when I needed you?

Didn’t you care-----at all?

God where were You when I needed you?

At work in this big universe?

Busy with others –with those less corrupt,

You looked away from my bitter cup.

God where were You when I needed you?

Oh God have you nothing to say?

God where were You when I needed you

I was Yours, I was lost, and afraid.

Oh, God where were You, I asked you today,

Like stones on your head my sad words rang.

You threw up your hands to shelter your face

Your nail scared hands—Your thorne scarred face.

Tears like a river that flows to the sea

Washed through my heart and comforted me.

For then I remembered you’d told me already

“I was there in you and my heart’s broken too.

For such as they’ve done to those who love me

They’ve done it to me, Oh my broken heart bleeds

When my children are wounded, their pain is my own.

They are flesh of my flesh and bone of my bone.

Oh the terrors stored up for the arrogant fool

who molests my dear child who submits to his rules.

He dresses her wounds with polluted salt

And says “She survived--so it must be her fault."

I was there my dear child—and I saw it all,

I covered your shame with my crimsom shawl.

Everything you did—everything you said

In response to his touch is upon his own  head.

Yes, I was there—and I saw it all—

Oh pity the man for my vengence will fall

on the heart that is hardend by what he has done.

He'll have no place to hide and no strength to run.

But if he repents, my dear child, I’ll forgive

For the matter was settled on Calvary’s Hill.

For I know the secrets of every man's heart—every

Hurt, every shame, every secret part.

For I was there, too, when his own  sorrows came

In the cold despair of another day

When the door crept open and evil came in

To stain his young life with another man's sin.

Perhaps, he too, will question someday

Where were you when my soul was carried away?

Perhaps he'll repent of repeating the part...

I’ll have mercy then—and I will heal his heart.

Hey girl, I love this poem. It really speaks alot in the few words. It really is sad when you think of all the awful things that has heppen in our lives and in the lives of many others, by those who had been wounded themselves. Wounded people wound. But I am thankful that God is there for us through the pain and that He is so faithful through it all to us and yes even to those who inflicted us with so much pain when they really repent and turn from their wicked ways.

I have to say that I didn't like the beginning of the poem... It had no hope...but then... WOW! You answered the question with such grace (no pun intended...but what a perfect word to use, on afterthought...) and eloquence. Then... you carried it a step farther... reminding us that there is always hope for everyone. This is a superb work of art. Thank you Linda for sharing it with us...

wow. this is such an amazing reminder that God is there. Always always there. Remember The Shack? God was with that child, too.

This poem has blown me away

This was a very perspective write of truth.
Even the wicked will know forgiveness. But punishment will occur as a parent loves thier child-they still punish them & love them anyway.
