Bethany, my 17 year old) is the youngest of my two daughters. I offer this poem by permission.

It is my joy, as a parent, to offer Bethany's poem.  She rarely shares her personal writing, so I am honored that she has chosen to share this poem, not only with me, but with my friends on Authorsden as well.

Bethany’s Poem

I was running

I knew not my destination

Only a fear of what was behind me

Made me press on.

When I looked forward there was darkness,

But when I failed to keep running

Destruction and pain flooded my eyes.

I grew weary, my body felt as though

I could run no more, yet my feet

Kept moving.

I was chocking on tears,

I was sweating blood.

I cried out for help,

And no one came to my aid

I was lost yet not forsaken

I was broken but still loved.

My heart felt as though it would burst

And my body was falling apart.

I heard a Voice in the distance.

I couldn’t make out the words

But it sounded safe, so I kept

Moving towards it.

I felt hands behind me

Grabbing at my soul—trying

To take possession of what they

Seemed to think was theirs.

There were claws on my skin.

The pain was nothing compared

To the screaming in my head.

Far ahead there was a light.

And I knew that this must be where

The Voice was coming from

As it appeared to be growing louder.

The darkness behind me seemed

To fear the Voice, for it began screaming.

The noise was almost unbearable

Never in my life had I heard anything

So grotesque.

I could now see my surroundings

For the light was growing brighter.

I was in a forest, there were trees and vines.

They flew by me as I continued

To run toward the light.

The Voice had become clear by now.

It was asking me—no begging me,

To press on.

Everytime it spoke, I could feel

The anger in the darkness.

I saw in front of me a single hand

Reaching through the light.

It was amazingly bright,

Therefore I could see no body

To which the hand belonged.

The darkness screamed at me

And told me not to take the hand.

I was terrified of both what was in front

Of me and behind.

But I felt a sense of mercy in the hand

Still outstretched to me.

A single tear rolled down my face

As I took hold of the hand.

And I immediately felt overcome

With love.

The darkness screamed.

It growled and thrashed in anger

Then it disappeared.

Soon I heard the cries of its next victim

I shuddered as I remembered the pain

And prayed for the next lost soul’s escape

Then I looked into the eyes of my Savior

And I knew I was finally home.

Your daughter, Linda, writes with a maturity that belies her young years: please tell her, well done. Such hope in these lines, praise in the midst of Storm: perfect.

Linda your daughter is gifted in the form of poetic expression as I encompassed myself into "Bethany's Poem" ...visually I could grasp the spiritual pursuit of salvation, and the hurendous chase from the pits of hell...

"Soon I heard the cries of its next victim

I shuddered as I remembered the pain"

C.S. Lewis's book, "the screwtape letters" came to my mind here. A powerful poem. One to be proud of for sure.

This poem reminds me of the story you wrote about the girl in the window...
There is a very real battle between good and evil going on in this world.

Beths poem gets you caught up in the race to get to that safe place. I really like the end as she points out not only her escape but the fact that she knew to feel and pray for the others that were still having to fight. Tell her she did an awsome job.

Dear Bethany,

Very powerfully and well said. Compelling imagery, the struggle gripping.
